In current heavy rotation: The Morning After Girls - Prelude: EP’s 1 & 2 (Rainbow Quartz Records)

Monday, June 12th, 2006

The_morning_after_girls
It took me awhile to get to this CD but right now I have Prelude: EP’s 1 & 2 by The Morning After Girls in heavy rotation on the stereo (which in this day and age can consist of anything from my iPod, computer, car stereo or honest to goodness home stero system). Have a listen to the very cool modern psychedelic sounds of Run For Our Lives for a sample. Great stuff.

The perfect Father’s Day gift: a Prog Rock compilation

Monday, June 12th, 2006

Nothing says "I Love You Dad" more than a 2 CD compilation featuring the vintage sounds of Genesis, ELP, Rush, Yes, Jethro Tull and more. That’s right Classic Rock magazine has put together an impressive array of prog rock talent onto 2 CDs called Prog Rock. Check out this track list:

CD1

1. Genesis- Carpet Crawlers

2. Jethro Tull – Sweet Dream

3. Van Der Graaf Generator – Killer

4. Focus – Syliva

5. Curved Air – Backstreet Luv

6. Steve Hackett – Firth Of Fifth

7. Manfred Mann – Solar Fire

8. Greenslade – Bedtime Manners Are Extra

9. Procol Harum – A Salty Dog

10. Rare Bird – Sympathy

11. Renaissance – Northern Lights

12. Family – Burlesque

13. Colosseum – Those About To Die

14. Marillion – Forgotten Sons

CD2

1. Yes – Yours Is No Disgrace

2. Emerson, Lake & Palmer – Lucky Man

3. The Nice – America

4. Barclay James Harvest – Child Of The Universe

5. Rush – The Spirit Of Radio

6. Blue Őyster Cult – (Don’t Fear) The Reaper

7. Traffic – Hole In My Shoe

8. Spirit – Fresh Garbage

9. Argent – Hold Your Head Up

10. Atomic Rooster – Tomorrow Night

11. IQ – Erosion

12. Twelfth Night – Love Song

13. Caravan – For Richard

And if that doesn’t get the old man rummaging through the attic for his old concert flask and roach clip collection then you might want to tell him that the original line up of Genesis might be touring in 2008! Prog rock rules!

US vs. UK Punk

Wednesday, June 7th, 2006

Aversion.Com is reporting that Sanctuary records is set to release on July 4th, 2006 a cool punk compillation that focuses on early punk’s three central hub’s - New York, Los Angeles and London called US vs. UK Punk. Using the logic that The Ramone’s July 4th, 1976 London concert kicked off the punk revolution (a logical conclusion), the compilation will feature the following 14 tracks:

Anarchy in the UK - Sex Pistols (Demo)

Teenage Kicks - The Undertones

Neat Neat Neat - The Damned

What Do I Get – Buzzcocks (Live)

Oh Bondage Up Yours! - X-Ray Spex

London Lady - The Stranglers (Live)

One Hundred Punks - Generation X

Hersham Boys - Sham 69

Beat on the Brat – Ramones

Personality Crisis - New York Dolls (Live)

Sonic Reducer - Dead Boys

Born To Lose - Johnny Thunders (Remix)

I’m Bored - Iggy Pop

We Got The Neutron Bomb - The Weirdos

TV Party - Black Flag

Institutionalized – Suicidal Tendencies

The compilation hits stores June 27, 2006. And oh ya, don’t bother arguing about what it doesn’t contain or we’ll be here all night.

The Rock and Roll Report Record Label Spotlight is on Warmfuzz Records

Tuesday, May 31st, 2005

I have just discovered the very cool record label Warmfuzz Records and they are releasing a lot of great stuff including two bands that I really like in Kelly’s Heels and the Trouble Dolls. Describing themselves as “warm, fuzzy, funky sounds,” Warmfuzz has a bunch of great musicians to check out so wander around the site and have a listen to some of the streaming Realplayer samples available.

An interview with Derek Sivers of CD Baby

Thursday, May 19th, 2005

There are not too many people out there running businesses that I admire. There is Ben and Jerry, the guys who started Rhino Records (who have both been bought out by larger conglomerates unfortunately) and Derek Sivers, the man behind CD Baby. Pure Music has a great in-depth interview with Derek where he expounds on his business philosophy, how CD Baby is run and what the future holds in store for the company. An inspiring read that makes me proud to be a CD Baby affiliate.

The Rock and Roll Report Record Label Spotlight is on Popboomerang Records

Monday, May 2nd, 2005

I have mentioned the “Planet of Popboomerang” compilations before as being full of sugary power pop goodness but there is more to Australian record label Popboomerang Records then their excellent compilation CDs. Bands like Kelly’s Heels, Vovoder and Remake Remodel have all released great records on Popboomerang and there are even more bands on their roster for you to check out. You can go to their Releases section to listen to some great samples to get an idea of what you will be buying and you can also read some reviews as well. Great stuff.

Voodoo Rythym

Tuesday, April 12th, 2005

Gospelposter I have been getting e-mail updates recently about what looks like a very cool film called "Voodoo Rythym- The Gospel of Primitive Rock ‘n’ Roll." You can download the trailer here in order to get an idea of what the film is all about and then keep your eyes peeled to see if it will be playing in your local Bijou sometime soon. And definitely explore the Voodoo Rythym website as it is chock-a-block full of cool "records to ruin any party" (through Voodoo Rythym Records) as well as a great selection of MP3s and other amazingly cool primitive rock and roll stuff to set your heart beating just a little faster. They will make a rock and roll junkie out of you! Highly recommended.

The Glorious Noise of Riviera

Tuesday, March 22nd, 2005

Riviera I am a big fan of the Glorious Noise e-zine so when I heard about their new label Glorious Noise Records I knew they would be putting out some interesting stuff. Jake at the label sent me their upcoming release “At The End of the American Century…” by Chicago-based Riviera and it is great. You will probably hear Riviera compared a lot to Wilco and other proponents of so-called “Americana” but really, what “At The End of the American Century…” is all about is richly textured melodies, creative uses of feedback and electronic washes and the exploitation of all the colors in their sonic palete to create some memorable and moody rock and roll. You can download some MP3s for your MP3 player to get a feel for their particular brand of rock and roll or you can preview the album in its entirety in streaming Real Audio in anticipation of its official release on April 5th, 2005. Glorious noise indeed.

From the Shindig Mailing List comes news of a Pebbles Tribute LP from Born Bad Records. If you’re not familiar with the Pebbles series of recordings, Greg Shaw from Bomp! had put together an incredible run of 28 LPs containing obscure ’60s recordings from all over the world, inspired in part from Lenny Kayes famed "Nuggets" series of little known but extremely raucous garage rock. Well "The Pebbles vol. 1-10 Tribute Album" comprises 17 bands and 16 exclusive tracks inspired by the first 10 volumes of this seminal slice of rock and roll history. The release will be limited to 400 vinyl copies only so contact the label if you want to get a copy toute de suite! The lineup is as follows (with comments from list poster Laurent Bigot):

“Of Hands And Hearts: Music For The Tsunami Disaster Fund” to be released March 15, 2005

Thursday, February 24th, 2005

Ohahonesheet The Asian Tsunami was a disaster of epic proportions and the response to the needs of the people in the countries affected has been overwhelmingly positive. There have been and continue to be numerous fundraising events put on for the victims of this tradgedy and one that caught my eye is the "Of Hands And Hearts: Music For The Tsunami Disaster Fund" double CD compilation that will be released March 22nd, 2005 by Norwalk Distributors. This CD compilation features a lot of great bands pumping out a ton of great music with a lot of it unreleased and is a bargain at the suggested price of $13.98. Even more importantly, 100% of the proceeds from the sale of this CD go to the humanitarian organization CARE so in essence there really is no reason why you wouldn’t want to buy it. It should be available at your finer indie rock stores and at most online stores including the wonderful Not Lame Records. For more information on each of the bands and links to their websites check out the "Of Hearts and Minds" website at Norwalk Distributors. Great music raising money for a needy cause is something that The Rock and Roll Report and I am sure you will always support. Mark March 15th, 2005 on your calender and pick this CD up. The Rock and Roll Report Record Label Spotlight is on American Laundromat Records

Tuesday, February 15th, 2005

Alr_logo_round_lo_res_1 Any label that is putting together a trubute CD to those cornball ’80s movies like "Pretty in Pink", "Breakfast Club", "Fast Times at Ridgemont High" and "St. Elmos Fire" sounds like something that requires further investigation. And sure enough, American Laundromat Records is a very cool indie rock label with a lot of great stuff in addition to the aforementioned "High School Reunion" (put together with another previously spotlighted record label Face Down Records). Featuring great bands like the Honored Guests, The Atomic Hep Cats (great name!) and the Lovable Rogues among others, American Laundromat Records is a lot of fun with some great  bands on the roster.  Still curious? Then head over to the Downloads page of the label and download away! Great stuff with a sense of humour. How refreshing. Check it out.

The Rock and Roll Report Record Label Spotlight is on No Fun Records

Thursday, February 10th, 2005

How can a record label that is so much fun be called No Fun Records? That was my first reaction after sampling some of the great rock and roll put out by this cool Michigan-based label. Although the label is branching out to other areas, No Fun Records specializes in rock and roll from South America and they have some great surf, psych, garage and power pop from that part of the world that is first rate rock and roll. If you are intrigued, check out their MP3 section. Perhaps you can start off with Honey Do by The Avatars, I Don’t Know Why by Thee Coronados or Can’t Be Undone by The Tandooris. And there’s plenty more where those came from. Great stuff!

The Rock and Roll Report Record Label Spotlight is on Zunior Records

Tuesday, January 25th, 2005

Zunior Records is a very cool Canadian Internet only record label based in Toronto, Ontario started by Dave Ulrich who was formerly of the Inbreds. Zunior is a great record label on a number of fronts. First of all they have a bunch of cool bands like The Feminists, Greenfield Main, Wax Mannequin, The Scribbled Out Man and The Mountainside Band amongst others. Another thing I like about this label is that they are musician oriented in that they charge very little for a band to sell their music through Zunior and yet they are fan friendly in that every release costs only $8.88 CDN with a majority of the price going to the musician. Finally for all you geeks out there they operate on open source software which is pretty cool in my opinion. A good way to get a taste of what the label has to offer is to check out their "Free Download of the Week" or better yet order one of their compilations like the Zunior Rock Collection #1 which is a hell of a deal for $4.44 CDN and the music is great to boot. If you want to support good music then check out Zunior Records and start downloading some sonic fun.

The Rock and Roll Report Record Label Spotlight is on Nicotine Records

Friday, January 14th, 2005

We all know that nicotine is bad for us. Not only does it cause innumerable health problems but it is highly addictive to boot. But what if I told you that there was a variety of nicotine available that is not only good for you but possibly a sonic necessity for those of us with a severe rock and roll monkey on our backs? What if I told you in fact that this addiction is good for you? The nicotine I am talking about doesn’t come from a pack of smokes but from the great Nicotine Records. Based in Torino Italy, Nicotine Records offers up a fantastic selection of raw and ripped rock and roll from bands like Los Dragos, The Stabilisers, The Sperms and many more. Absolutely first rate rock and roll from these obviously seriously deranged Italian rock and roll fanatics. Just go to their Audio Video section for a whole host of MP3s that you can download and enjoy. Very cool stuff.
