Rock and Roll Report Podcast of the Week: CD Baby DIY Music Podcast

Tuesday, September 18th, 2007

cd-baby-podcast.jpgBilled as a podcast dedicated to the “do it yourself” musician, the CD Baby DIY Music Podcast is a veritable treasure trove of useful information for the independent musician looking to make it in the biz on their own terms. Featuring both helpful information on the podcast blog as well as the podcast itself, this is a great place to find achievable stuff that is aimed at the working musician (i.e. one who doesn’t have a lot of cash).

This week’s episode is all about video and how it can help your career. Extremely helpful and they always play CD Baby artists so I would consider the podcast a “must listen” if you are a working musician. Check it out.

Progress on The Rock and Roll Report Podcast

Thursday, September 6th, 2007

podcast-image.jpgWell progress on the Rock and Roll Report Podcast is moving ahead on several fronts. I have ordered a brand new, Canadian-made microphone from Kel Audio and I am trying to make heads or tails of my Tapco mixer and Audacity software. My brand new Dell desktop is sitting in the living room in boxes (well actually it’s for my son but I will use it temporarily until I can order my MacBook!) ready to be set up and I am in the middle of contacting bands and labels to see if they are interested in getting involved (if you are, contact me at rockandrollreport@gmail.com).

The plan is to record four shows in September and launch the first one at the end of that month. Each show will be approximately 20 minutes long to start and will feature 4-5 songs, similar to one of my sets on Rock and Roll Report Radio. I am itching to get this thing going now that summer is rapidly fading away so make sure you check back here often and when the time has come, please subscribe to the podcast.

I am looking forward to having something cool to stick in your ear, if you know what I mean!

UPDATE! Just wanted to give a big thank you to all the bands, labels and PR people that have been so generous in wanting to get involved with the podcast. It looks like this is going to be a hell of a lot of fun as I already have all kinds of ideas about different show themes and features that should keep things fresh. And seeing that Apple has announced that the iTunes podcast directory now contains 125,000 podcasts I will have my work cut out for me to stand out in the crowd but I am up for the task! I’ll keep updating you on my progress as I get closer to the launch. In the words of Kent Dorfman, “this is going to be great!”

Rock and Roll Report Podcast Focus: The Rock and Roll Geek Show & Indiecast

Thursday, September 6th, 2007

michael-butler.JPGProbably one of the longest running (260 shows and still going strong) and quite honestly one of the most fun podcasts that I listen to is the Rock and Roll Geek Show hosted by American Heartbreak bassist Michael Butler. He actually hosts 2 different podcasts.

The first is The Rock and Roll Geek Show which is the grand daddy of rock podcasts and has featured everything from a detailed dissecting the recent Van Halen reunion press conference to blow by blow reviews of the God-awful Rock of Love reality show hosted by Brett Michaels on VH1.

The second podcast is the Rock and Roll Geek Indie Cast which features the proverbial “less talk, more rawk” with a pretty wide range of rock and roll, some you might have heard but a lot that you probably haven’t.

What I like the most about both shows is the attitude. There is no doubt that Butler lives and breaths rock and roll but he is also cool, laid back and his show will definitely not be confused with your befuddled local classic rock radio morning DJs that you are no doubt ready to throttle any day now. For 2 podcasts that last approximately one hour each I have yet to get tired with it and unsubscribe, it is that good. The fact that he swears and drinks during the show is just icing on the cake. Subscribe to the show and give it a try. I am sure I can speak for Michael and say that he will “really appreciate it.”

The Rock and Roll Report Podcast Focus is on The Plan 9 Rock Show

Friday, August 31st, 2007

plan-nine.jpgI really don’t listen to what I like to call “traditional” radio anymore. Oh sure once in awhile in the car I will switch on the local classic rock or alternative rock radio stations but the majority of my listening is done to non-commercial and public radio (and even that is dropping dramatically. Don’t tell CKUT!) and especially podcasts. I am not a paid schill for Apple but the iPod and iTunes make a killer combination that makes subscribing to great rock and roll podcasts merely a matter of a click or two. No fuss, no muss.

One of the things that I have learned is that because it is so easy to subscribe to podcasts in iTunes, you tend to go crazy at first and I subscribed to a ton of podcasts originally if they had any connection to rock and roll, no matter how tenuous. The thing I discovered quickly is that it becomes impossible to listen to all this stuff unless you plan on wearing your iPod 24/7 and not sleeping so I have now joined the “quality over quantity” club and subscribe to far less podcasts than before.

One of the podcasts that I do subscribe to is the Plan Nine Rock Show. Hosted by Jasper, the owner of graphic design and screen printing studio Plan Nine Print, the Plan Nine Rock Show plays a lot of very cool rock and roll and Jasper conducts great interviews with bands, mainly because he comes across to them as a genuine fan and not some asshole “in the biz.” The podcast is usually a good hour and what is so nice about podcasts is that you can review his playlist after the show and check out the websites of the bands he has played and purchase a CD or download. This is a great show and definitely a priority listen for me.

You can check out the show’s MySpace page here: http://www.myspace.com/plannineprint

Rockin’ With Hef

Wednesday, August 29th, 2007

dvd-playboy-ml.jpgDuring the Swinging Sixties, few people swung more than Playboy magazine publisher, Hugh Hefner. In 1969, Hef offered the public a chance to vicariously experience a piece of his swinging lifestyle by launching a TV show called, “Playboy After Dark.” Set in his penthouse, or possibly a studio tricked out to look like one, “Playboy After Dark” was essentially a big cocktail party presided over by a very genial Hef.

A typical show featured a mixed crowd of fifty or sixty people milling around or lounging on couches drinking, smoking, and carrying on like they were having a great old time. The older guests wore suits or evening gowns, while the young people favored bell bottoms, paisleys, love beads, and headbands. There was always a celebrity guest or two to be interviewed, as well as some of the popular musical acts of the day, including Deep Purple, Steppenwolf, James Brown, The Grateful Dead, and Iron Butterfly.

Clips of some of the musical performances are now available on Youtube, and they provide some tasty little nuggets of pop culture history. It’s positively surreal to see a very clean-cut Hef in his tuxedo “rapping” with the musicians and self-consciously uttering the occasional “groovy” and “far out.” Interestingly, some of the artists played live while others lip-synched for some reason. Either way, though, it’s a lot of fun to watch some legendary names in rock and roll, often sporting some truly wild get-ups, back in their early days. To check them out, go to Youtube.com and search for “Playboy” and any of the band names listed above. Enjoy!

The Rock and Roll Report Cool Podcast of the Week: Bands Under The Radar

Thursday, August 23rd, 2007

160×120_butr_logo.jpgIf you are looking for something new to listen to that you just know you won’t hear on the radio then I urge you to check out the Bands Under The Radar podcast.

Hosted by Kami Knake, Bands Under the Radar focuses on unsigned bands and indie artists and I have already been turned on to a ton of new bands in just the short time that I have been listening. BUTR is just another example of a growing number of passionate music fans who, fed up with the total lack of mainstream attention that their favourite artists are getting are taking matters into their own hands.

You can check out Kami’s MySpace page at http://www.myspace.com/KamiKay and don’t forget to sign up for her mailing list to receive the podcast playlists and iMix’s that she has produced for each podcast. Cool stuff.

Rock and Roll Report Radio Playlist for August 6, 2007 on CKUT FM

Wednesday, August 8th, 2007

ramones_simpsons.gifWhat a great way to spend a Monday night, sitting in a radio station spinning fantastic rock and roll at full volume for friends (and myself for that matter) and really, that is the heart of Rock and Roll Report Radio. Since it is not dictated by any corporate entity or program director but from my very own rock and roll heart I think it reflects in the show and so far those who have listened have been very kind and have tended to agree with me. The bottom line with anything is always passion. If you are passionate about music, whether you be playing it on the radio, on stage or on your home stereo you just want to share it with as many people as you can because it feels good and you hope that they will get the same buzz out of it as you do. I really hope my passion shines through on the air.

It is interesting to note that the majority of songs I played on Monday night’s show were only in my possession for no more than a few weeks with at least a quarter of them being MP3s e-mailed to me by bands. Such is the power of this Web 2.0 world where I can get into contact with a band on MySpace on a Tuesday, have an MP3 or two on my iPod within the hour with the CD in my mailbox by the end of the week. It is the reason why I will never run out of material for the radio show, podcast or blog which is always a comforting thought.

For those of you that tuned in live or have listened to the podcast or streamcast from the CKUT archives you will no doubt have noticed that I started things off a bit differently with a brand new intro for the upcoming Rock and Roll Report podcast courtesy of Miami-based Featured on Fridays. I am in the planning stages (for what seems like forever) for the podcast but I fully intend to launch it this fall with a projected end of September start date. If you are interested in getting involved by all means give me a shout. Same great rock and roll but with more opportunity to experiment and try some different things so it should be a lot of fun and I hope it will make your MP3 player proud.

OK, let’s get to the heart of the matter. This is what I played on the show with links to the band websites so you can see for yourself what they are all about. Thanks for listening as always and a big thank you to everyone who sent me kind words and encouragement, it is greatly appreciated.

Song - Album - Artist

  1. King of Cool - Year of the Cock - Big Cock
  2. Stay - Fully Automatic - Handsome Devil
  3. Main in the Sky - s/t - The Soft Explosions
  4. Real Thing - Unreleased - American Anthem
  5. Bang Bang - We Are Saints - KLIK
  6. Wired for Sound -Wired for Sound - Certain Stars
  7. Hit Parade - Black Beauty - Beretta76
  8. Knock on Wood - Now Playing - Shameless
  9. Give it Up - A Bitch is a Bitch - Lick & a Promise
  10. Comedown Baby - Let You Down Easy - The Masons
  11. Energy - New Magnetic Wonder - Apples in Stereo
  12. Great Big Hat - Debbie Does Nothing - Deluxe Leisure King
  13. Charlie & His UFO - Kasablanca BLVD - Kasablanca BLVD

Radio Dio is on the ropes!

Monday, July 30th, 2007

For those of you that enjoy The Rock and Roll Report’s regular feature “Rock and Roll Postcard from France” written by Gérard Girard you may or may not know that he is also a DJ at France’s Radio Dio. Unfortunately, Radio Dio is undergoing a severe cash crisis. I post here Gérard’s comment on the subject:

Dear music devotee,

As you may already know, Radio Dio, the FM station which has been hosting my weekly sweet pop programme is in great financial trouble. After having suffered many financial bankruptcies, mainly due to the fact that Radio Dio is fiercely ad-free and independent from all forms of commercial bound, the station is now facing a major turning point of its history. In the next six months we’ll all be waiting for a sort of miracle to happen – an unexpected and extraordinary financial support from our local politicians, a wonderful and reliable sponsor, a major public upheaval that would lead to a positive riot, a magic wizard offering us three wishes…

I will definitely keep you informed as to what will be happening in the next few months but I already would like to thank all of you who expressed their total support via e-mail. I also encourage the others to pass on their comments and/or thoughts to me. These messages will really be useful to show to all those concerned that Dio is an important voice and a much followed reference throughout the world.

Independent Radio News of Note

Thursday, July 19th, 2007

small-antenna_radiotower.jpgAs a big supporter of community/independent radio and a volunteer myself at CKUT FM, I like to encourage people to volunteer or at the very least listen to their local community radio stations as much as possible. Here are some stations with news that you will find interesting.

WXPN is asking for the Top 885 Music Moments. While 885 corresponds to this University of Pennsylvania’s FM frequency, it certainly gives us a lot of room to maneuver. Get in your moments now! You have until August 31, 2007 to submit your contributions. I always thought that the Grateful Dead playing at the pyramids in Egypt was a particularly cool musical moment.

WPRB on the other hand bills itself as the United States oldest college radio station (67 years and counting!) and since they get no money from Princeton they are finding the need to conduct their very first on-air membership drive. If you want to support independent radio in the U.S., this is a great way to do it.

Finally, WOXY ,which went from a broadcast FM operation to an Internet-only station and then was knocked off the air due to a serious lack of funds but was then rescued with the financial support of LaLa.com, are back on the airwaves! They have signed an agreement with Cincinnati Public radio station WVXU to broadcast over one of their High Definition multicast channels. Great news from a station that bills itself as the “future of rock and roll” and which seemed to be out for the count not too long ago.

Rock and Roll Report Radio is on tonight on CKUT 90.3 FM

Monday, July 16th, 2007

Just a reminder that Rock and Roll Report Radio will be on tonight from 10:00 - 11:00 PM EST on CKUT FM. You can listen online at www.ckut.ca.

Tonight I will be playing songs about kids, machine guns, nymphomaniacs and filthy habits so it should be a good show! Tune in and enjoy.

If you are interested in what I have played on Rock and Roll Report Radio in the past check out my post A Re-Introduction to Rock and Roll Report Radio. This is all indie and DIY stuff that is sadly overlooked for the most part by commercial rock radio which insists we only want to hear the same bands ad nauseum or only bands on major record labels. Get off your asses and dig people and you will discover a treasure trove of rock and roll that is literally no further than your fingertips. Jeez it drives me crazy!

Internet Radio is on the Ropes in the United States. Act now!

SaveNetRadio.org

(From Save Net Radio.Org)

We are appealing to the millions of Internet radio listeners out there, the webcasters they support and the artists and labels we treasure to rise up and make your voices heard before this vibrant medium is silenced.

This situation is grave, but that makes the message all the simpler and more serious.

CALL YOUR SENATORS AND REPRESENTATIVES RIGHT AWAY and urge them to support the Internet Radio Equality Act. If they’ve already co-sponsored, thank them and tell them to fight to bring it to the floor for an immediate vote. If the line is busy, call back. Call until you know your voice has been heard. Your voices are what have gotten us this far - Congress has listened. Now, they are our only hope.

We are outmatched by lobbying power and money but we are NOT outmatched by facts and passion and the power of our voices.

A Re-Introduction to Rock and Roll Report Radio

Friday, July 13th, 2007

small-ckut-console.jpgI have been getting some nice comments about my monthly stint on the Drastic Plastic Program on CKUT FM here in Montreal and heard around the world on the ‘Net called Rock and Roll Report Radio. What started out as a fill-in gig for regular host Doug Ford has evolved into a regular solo monthly radio show with another monthly appearance as part of the 3 Amigos, which is myself, Doug and UK rock and roller Armitage Shanks who also has a monthly radio show in the same 10:00 - 11:00 PM EST time slot.

I originally got involved in CKUT because I was looking for some real world training in radio before embarking on my podcast (which is to debut any month now!) and volunteering at a community radio station was just the ticket. While working in the record library I somehow managed to fill in on a two hour all-Canadian indie show called Underground Sounds which is still broadcast Mondays from 8:00 - 10:00 PM EST right before Drastic after a full 30 minutes of on-air training (it was summer so a lot of people were on vacation). On the drive home I was listening to Doug’s show and I really liked what I heard so I called him up and not long after he asked me to fill in on Drastic Plastic and from there we never looked back.

The cool thing about Rock and Roll Report Radio, which will next be broadcast on July 16th, 2007 is that there are multiple ways to listen. You can listen the old fashioned way over the air at 90.3 FM here in Montreal, you can listen to it live over the ‘Net at www.ckut.ca or you can download the podcast for a full week from the date of broadcast, the link to which I always post on The Rock and Roll Report along with the playlist and links to the bands that were played. If you missed the show and more than a week has passed you can still listen to it streaming at the archives, all you need to know is the date, select Drastic Plastic and enjoy!

So for those of you new to Rock and Roll Report Radio or current listeners wanting to listen to a show you might have missed, here is the complete listing of show dates with links to the playlists for your reading and listening pleasure. I hope you can tune in on Monday night and get your rocks off with me. Now does that sound kinda weird or what? LOL

The mission of Rock and Roll Report Radio has not changed since its inception and will carry over to the podcast. It is to have fun playing some of the greatest rock and roll out there that is sadly overlooked by commercial rock radio, usually because it is on some small indie or DIY label or the band is unsigned. One listen to Rock and Roll Report Radio and I think you will be convinced that it puts the rock back into rock radio. If only some of these big shot commercial DJs and program directors would do a bit of digging as they would be amazed at the gold that they would find.

See ya on Monday!

Later.
