The legendary CBGB’s to close this week

Monday, October 16th, 2006

Cbgb CBGB’s, the launchpad for everybody from the Ramones to Television to Blondie is closing its doors on Sunday for good and possibly decamping to Vegas. Is it just me but does that sound just plain wrong? Anyhow, Sunday will be it’s last day as a rock club. It certainly will maintain its place as a legendary rock and roll venue along with places like the Filmores. Little Steven tried to keep it going but to no avail. Have a toast on Sunday to another rock and roll institution gone but never forgotten.

UPDATED: The New York Times has a report on the last show by Patti Smith in CBGB sounds its final note.

Photographer Bob Gruen Comes to Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum to talk about working with the Clash

Monday, October 16th, 2006

CLEVELAND (October 13, 2006) – Famed photographer Bob Gruen will come to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum on October 25, 2006 at 7:00 p.m. to talk about his experience photographing the Clash. This event is in conjunction with the Rock Hall’s newest exhibit Revolution Rock: The Story of the Clash.

Bob Gruen is one of the most well-known and respected photographers in rock and roll. From Muddy Waters to the Rolling Stones; Elvis to Madonna; Bob Dylan to Bob Marley; John Lennon to Johnny Rotten, he has captured the music scene for over forty years in photographs that have gained worldwide recognition.

Shortly after John Lennon moved to New York in 1971, Bob became John and Yoko’s personal photographer and friend, making photos of their working life as well as private moments. In 1974 he created the iconic images of John Lennon wearing a New York City t-shirt and, standing in front of the Statue of Liberty making the peace sign - two of the most popular of Lennon’s images.

Bob has worked with major rock acts such as Led Zeppelin, The Who, David Bowie, Tina Turner, Elton John, Aerosmith, Kiss and Alice Cooper. In 1989, he documented the epic trip to Russia of the “Moscow Music Peace Festival” featuring Ozzy Osbourne, Motley Crue and Bon Jovi. For many years Bob was the official photographer for the New York New Music Seminar, covering dozens of aspiring new bands in the course of a summer week.

As chief photographer for Rock Scene magazine in the 1970s, Bob specialized in candid, behind the scenes photo features. He toured extensively with the emerging punk and new wave bands including the New York Dolls, Sex Pistols, Clash, Ramones, Patti Smith Group and Blondie.

In June, 2004, in London, Bob was presented with MOJO Magazine’s prestigious Honours List Award for Classic Image.

This event is free with a reservation. Please RSVP to edu@rockhall.org or call 216.515.8426.

Is “Rocket 88″ the first rock and roll song?

Monday, August 14th, 2006

Is "Rocket 88" by Jackie Brentson and his Delta Cats the very first rock and roll song? After all, Charlie Watts and Ian Stewart named their boogie woogie combo Rocket 88 after this exact song because they felt that it was in fact the first rock and roll song ever released. I have heard the argument before and they are quite convincing if you are into that kind of debate. Author Alex Martels makes his case in The Most Influential Song You Have Never Heard and at the very least it will want to make you track down a copy. I vote yes.

Remembering the Red Dog Saloon

Wednesday, July 12th, 2006

Red_dog_saloon_outside I have always been fascinated with rock and roll history, especially the "psychedelic years" that started in 1965-66 and ended somewhere around 1968-69. One of the stories that has always fascinated me was that of the Red Dog Saloon, that psychedelic cowboy bar where the Charlatans were the house band. Operating for one summer in 1965, I have always found it difficult to get more than some passing info on this slice of rock and roll history.

Luckily I came across two great sources of information on the Red Dog. The first is the excellent article The Red Dog Saloon and the Amazing Charlatans by Andrew Lau which appeared in the December 2005 issue of the excellent online music mag Perfect Sound Forever. The second is the site The Beginnings which has some very cool memorabilia and photos from the Red Dog Saloon to check out.

I suppose it’s the sense of community that has always interested me in the psychedelic era of both San Francisco and London circa 1966-67. While drugs played an obvious role in the genesis of the whole era it was rock and roll that held everything together until it was essentially "outed" to the rest of the world and comercialized beyond recognition. Places like the Red Dog Saloon are just another reminder of what a rich history rock and roll has and continues to make.

45th Anniversary of Mersey Beat

Monday, July 3rd, 2006

On July 6 1961, 45 years ago, art student Bill Harry and his 17-year-old girlfriend Virginia, borrowed £50 and launched a newspaper which was to radically affect the future of popular music.

Bill coined the phrase Mersey Beat as a name for the paper, based on his image of the entire area of Merseyside he’d cover. The name has now become an established phrase internationally.

The previous year Bill, together with John Lennon, Stuart Sutcliffe and Rod Murray, as ‘the Dissenters’, made a vow to make Liverpool famous. John was to do it with his music, Stuart and Rod with their painting and Bill with his writing.

John succeeded beyond anyone’s dreams with the Beatles, Stuart died tragically at the age of 21, but his artwork has survived and is internationally recognised, and Bill succeeded with his creation of Mersey Beat.

CBGB’s Closes for Good

Thursday, September 1st, 2005

It is unfortunately true that the legendary CBGB’s, birthplace of the Ramones has been closed for good. Now, while we bemoan the legendary rock and roll venue, I would like to check into the truth of this statement made by the landlord:

The Bowery Residents’ Committee, landlord of the building on the Bowery, "believes it is in the best interest of our clients — the homeless and neediest New Yorkers — to sever this relationship," BRC executive director Muzzy Rosenblatt said.

If this is the case then fine but how exactly is the closure of CBGB’s going to help the homeless of New York? I would like some details.

Chet Helms R.I.P.

Thursday, June 30th, 2005

I was sorry to hear that the legendary rock and roll promoter Chet Helms, he of the Avalon Ballroom and the Family Dog passed away at age 62. Described as the "Father of the Summer of Love" Helms was a proud hippie through and through who actually lived the ideals that the ’60s counterculture was supposed to espouse. Another rock and roll legend gone.

Summer of Love: Art of the Psychedelic Era 27 May – 25 September 2005

Tuesday, May 3rd, 2005

From the West Coast Psychedelia and Acid Rock group comes news of a very cool art exhibition in Liverpool, UK this spring. Check this out:

Summer of Love is a ground-breaking exhibition which reveals the unprecedented exchanges between contemporary art, popular culture, civil unrest and the moral upheaval during the 1960s and early 70s. The art and culture of the psychedelic period constitutes one of the most exciting but also much neglected phenomena of the twentieth- century. Moving beyond a purely nostalgic reception, Summer of Love attempts to uncover this forgotten and repressed aesthetic that continues to exert an increasingly powerful influence on many contemporary artists. The exhibition reconstructs the original creative and utopian potential of psychedelic art and locates it within the wider cultural and political context of the 1960s and early 70s, presenting it as an international phenomenon with works from the UK, United States, Europe and Japan. It demonstrates how artists were deeply entrenched in popular culture, influenced by the mind-altering effect of drugs and participated in counter-cultural activities. The inclusion of psychedelic art created by major figures such as Andy Warhol and Yayoi Kusama illustrates the critical role of psychedelia within the contemporary aesthetic discourse, providing a complex and more comprehensive picture of the art and culture of the 1960s.

The psychedelic aesthetic manifested itself in all aspects of cultural production, ranging from art, music and film to architecture, graphic design and fashion. Summer of Love presents a rich selection of over 150 important posters, album covers and underground magazines, in particular from the San Francisco and London scenes. The exhibition includes paintings, photographs and sculptures by, amongst others, Isaac Abrams, Richard Avedon, Lynda Benglis, Harold Cohen, Richard Hamilton, Robert Indiana (his celebrated Love signs), Richard Lindner and John McCracken. Numerous long-neglected artists are represented with rarely seen or specially reconstructed works and installations. Major environments include Mati Klarwein’s New Aleph Sanctuary 1963-71, which brings together many of his motifs (which he also used in his designs for Santana album covers) in a spectacular installation. Vernon Panton’s colourful and amorphous furniture landscape tell of utopian visions of liberated and relaxed living.

A special emphasis is placed on environments as well as film, video and multimedia installations, replicating the total experience of psychedelic light shows and music performances. Andy Warhol appropriated the use of light shows and film and slide projection for the Exploding Plastic Inevitable and Velvet Underground. Major film installations include a room with multiple projections of the Boyle Family’s films, first used in light shows for the psychedelic band The Soft Machine and a liquid crystal projection by Gustav Metzger. The medium of film is integrated into the exhibition through large-scale projections and an accompanying film programme with underground, experimental and mainstream films. Films presented in the exhibition include works by Lawrence Jordan, Stan Vanderbeek, Andy Warhol, James Whitney, Jud Yalkut and Nam June Paik.

The emergence and flowering of psychedelic art coincided with one of the most revolutionary and tumultuous periods of the twentieth century. The art in the exhibition is contextualised through a wealth of documentary material, highlighting the events, people and places in four centres of countercultural activity: San Francisco, New York, London and Liverpool. The sections include photographs, films of concerts, light shows and places such as the UFO nightclub in London and the Human Be-In in San Francisco, featuring Allen Ginsberg and Timothy Leary. The underground press, emerging during the 1960s as an instrument of alternative communication and democratisation, is represented through Oz magazine, International Times, East Village Other and The San Francisco Oracle and many other publications and documents. Providing an intriguing picture of a period in fundamental moral and political upheaval, they are also testament to an extraordinary burst of creativity and revolution in design and printing techniques.

Summer of Love: Art of the Psychedelic Era will tour to the Kunsthalle Schirn Frankfurt from 2 November 2005 – 12 February 2006.

A strikingly designed and fully illustrated catalogue examining art, posters, film and music will be available alongside the Summer of Love Reader, published by Liverpool University Press, which is an in- depth authorative look at the underground movements.

Johnnie Johnson R.I.P.

Thursday, April 14th, 2005

Rock and Roll legend Johnnie Johnson, the man behind the piano keys for such Chuck Berry classics as "Roll Over Beethoven" and "No Particular Place to Go," has passed away at the age of 80. Keith Richards was always a big fan of Johnson and I remember reading that when it was time to put together the backing band for the Berry documentary "Hail, Hail Rock and Roll" he insisted that Johnson be a part of it despite the bad blood between him and Berry. RIP Johnnie.
