MySpace Launches Two Live Music Programs Spotlighting Video Webcasts And Instant Messaging

Monday, November 20th, 2006

MySpace.com, the leading global lifestyle portal, announced the official launch of two new programs, “MySpace LIVE!” and “Hey, Play This…” incorporating live video web streaming, instant messenger, and user profiles to create unique, live experiences for the MySpace community. The launch of MySpace LIVE! and Hey, Play This… join MySpace’s existing community music and film programs including Secret Shows and The List which engage the global network by coupling site functionality with offline events.

“With a diverse user community and massive social platform, MySpace is a natural fit for live, interactive content,” said Josh Brooks, VP of Content and Programming for MySpace. “MySpace LIVE! and Hey, Play This… add a new dimension to our music community and we hope to develop future original programming and partnerships that focus on the live experience.”

MySpace LIVE! will be the first live broadcast program on MySpace and allow users to submit MySpace messages to the fans and bands attending the performance. The first MySpace LIVE! event will feature Paul Oakenfold (http://myspace.com/pauloakenfold) in Miami at Club Space on Saturday, November 18 and will be exclusively broadcast on MySpace at http://myspace.com/sidekick3. The event celebrates the legendary DJ with an all-night music event in support of his new album, A Lively Mind. The six hour live web broadcast will also feature dance music pioneers Sandra Collins and Jonathan Peters along with various local performers, visual artists Fuevoz, and a myriad of MySpace user generated content.

Concordia alumni lead the way in the Montreal indie-rock scene

Thursday, November 16th, 2006

Coatofarms I’m not one of those university graduates who runs around loaded in alumni gear going on and on about the place where they partied their brains out for 3 years and did some studying on the side but at the same time, I like to toot their horns when the right opportunity comes around. As a graduate of Concordia University (as well as the University of Western Ontario) when I saw the article Concordia alumni lead the way in the Montreal indie-rock scene I just thought that this was the perfect thing to post about.

I think for a number of years Concordia has toiled away from the spotlight that was perpetually shining on the much older and better respected McGill University but as we hit the 21st century in full press Concordia is well pressed to confront this century’s needs. On top of all of their impressive programs in business, computer science, film, journalism and communications studies, Concordia has always prided itself on its contributions to the fine arts. Whether indie rock can be considered a “fine art” of course is open to debate but there is no doubt that Concordia grads have their fair share of influence in Montreal’s red hot music scene. Read the article to get the low down on just a few.

Record Review: The Fags - “Light ‘Em Up” (Idol Records)

Thursday, November 16th, 2006

Fags_light_em_up_cd_cover_1Normally when a press release says something like “the natural successors to the Beatles” or some such tripe I kind of blow it off with a roll of the eyes but every once in awhile there is something to these comparisons. The Fags have been billed as a natural successor to Cheap Trick and dammit, if that is not an apt description.

Power pop with a bit of a raunchy edge, The Fags are a power pop trio from Detroit that have managed to combine some amazing hooks, 3 part vocal harmonies and just all around great songs to make their debut CD “Light ‘Em Up” a natural to blast out on that Saturday night party when the neighbors have headed to the mountains for the weekend and that girl you like has finally made herself….available if only you’d call. Starting with the instantly catchy “Tonight” and the first single “Rockstar” this is the kind of rock and roll that demands continuous plays as soon as it is popped into the CD player and doesn’t let up until the last of the 11 tracks drifts off into the haze.

The band has a refreshing take on rock and roll. They somehow seem to think that rock and roll was at one time “fun” and that radio was “cool” and the music played was adventurous and exciting and begged to be played loud. How dare they think such rebellious thoughts! The Fags are showing that rock and roll doesn’t have to take itself too seriously, not when they are producing songs like this, songs that just make you want smile from ear to ear, grab another cold one and connect with that girl who only just now realizes what exquisite taste you have in music.

The air guitar T-shirt

Wednesday, November 15th, 2006

Forget the wheel, the transistor or the light bulb, the world’s coolest invention has to be the air guitar T-Shirt. A T-shirt that interprets your arm movements and converts them to guitar sounds! How cool is that? Stand back all you shredders out there! I am ready to rip it up with only the shirt on my back! This could be brutally dangerous to be honest.

06treasrsdvd_dt1 Love ‘em or loath them, the Hard Rock Cafes, Casinos and Hotels have an amazing quantity of very cool rock and roll memorabilia hanging from the walls. If you want to see what they have and how they got it, you might want to check out their new Hard Rock Treasures DVD, a 90 minute journey tracing how the Hard Rock finds and displays their treasure. Pretty cool.

… into a plate full of salad.

The great Diamond David Lee Roth, the only Sugartune-recognized singer of Van Halen, has been caught filling his face with salad. At the rate he is taking it down, we judge his blood-sugar level to be LOW.

Record Review: Jonathan Bright - Radio Free Tennessee (Unsigned)

Monday, November 13th, 2006

Jonathan_bright_1Holy shit I love this CD! Jonathan Bright is a Nashville native but you won’t hear any country licks on his EP Radio Free Tennessee only incredibly catchy, pure rock and roll that brings to mind the type of hard rock candy that David Lee Roth-era Van Halen brought to the rock and roll party.

Right from the jungle drum kick off of Tweaking the Fine Tune I knew that this guy was special. First of all he has the voice and the guitar tone I love (hey these things are important!) and to top it all off he adds these little musical detours in his songs that keep things interesting. Along with Fine Tune you can add Shine to my personal iPod playlist as this stuff just feels right all the way through. Modern twists with major power pop sensibilities, Radio Free Tennessee is a blast from beginning to end. Have a listen on his website for free but really, just go out and buy the CD. You won’t regret it. And check out his MySpace site where he rips out a killer version of “Hot For Teacher.” Very cool stuff. Highly recommended.

Rock Festival in Pyong Yang

Monday, November 13th, 2006

I’m not sure if this is for real or not but I saw it on the Audities list I thought I would post it just the same:

If you are a band playing any kind of rock, including heavy metal, then you can participate ‘ROCK FOR PEACE’ in Pyong Yang, the capital city of North Korea. This is the very first time in history that North Korea allows western musicians in the heart of DPRK territory to play capitalist popular music. There are few restrictions and conditions on participation but any band will be considered even though you are from USA. The lyrics should not contain admirations on war, sex, violence, murder, drug, rape, non-governmental society, imperialism, colonialism, racism, anti-DPRK, and anti-socialism. The concert will be held in March 01, 2007 under the management of Voice of Korea. For inquiries, email to Jean-Baptiste Kim, the head of Voice of Korea.

Uhh, shouldn’t they be spending the money on food for their starving population? Just a thought.

Record Review: Poets & Pornstars - S/T (Karmagun Records)

Friday, November 10th, 2006

Poetspornstars2 LA has a particular rock and roll culture. Not as punk as New York or as flash as London, LA has always contributed a certain sleaziness to rock and roll and the approriately named Poets & Pornstars are a band who perfectly encapsulate that Sunset Strip raunch.

On their debut CD the self-described “LA’s favourite band” certainly backs up their claim with 11 hard pop nuggets. I was immediately taken with Hal Ozsan’s great rock and roll vocals with just the right amount of raunch to keep things rock and roll but bowled over when I heard “Monkey” and especially his vocal work on the incredible”Inflatable Girl.” This guy definitely has a good set of pipes and he proves it over and over on this record. With a record eight week engagement at the infamous Viper Room, Poets & Pornstars have pretty much matched if not beaten outright their recorded output with an incendiary live show that just screams hot babes, loud rock and roll and trouble in the darkened corners of wherever they play. Their CD includes a bunch of memorable hard rock gems that have to be played very loud for maximum effect and two nice slower pieces that are impressive because they’re not cookie cutter hard rock. No formulaic crap here, just very cool stuff from a band that looks like it has a great future ahead of it. Check out their MySpace site and have a listen for yourself. Another addition to my iPod for the weekend!
