Rock and Roll Report Radio is back on the air December 4, 2006

Thursday, November 30th, 2006

59motorolaradios Just a heads up that I will be back on the air with Rock and Roll Report Radio on December 4th 2006 from 10:00 - 11:00 PM EST on CKUT FM in Montreal. This edition will be a kind of look back at 2006 so I will be playing some of my favourites that I featured on previous shows as well as a couple of new songs from bands that I have featured in the past. I will try and cram as much cool rock and roll in 60 minutes as humanly possible so please tune in and turn it up.

As usual, you can listen to the show live over the air or streaming in real time from the CKUT website. If you can’t listen live you will have the opportunity to download a podcast of the show for one week after it airs and thereafter you can listen to the streaming archives after that.

Check it out, turn it up and rock out!

Emergency Dump…

Thursday, November 30th, 2006

Who hasn’t had to take an emergency dump at one time or another?

The worst outcome is usually soiled underpants. The video below demonstrates that emergency dumps can be brought to all new levels. God Bless Evolution.

*ARMITAGE SHANKS **27 NOVEMBER 2006** PLAYLIST*

Wednesday, November 29th, 2006

/Rap /— This is once again Armitage Shanks, your Man from Manchester / First Song Intro//

1. “Six Queens” — Larrikin Love (THE FREEDOM SPARK) London Opening for Babyshambles in Europe currently / Founding bands of “Thamesbeat” scene / punkish reggae gypsy sound / influences are the Clash, the Libertines and the Pogues

2. “Clocks Tick Louder At The Dead Of Night” — Mumm-Ra (SINGLE) Outstanding new band from Bexhill-on-Sea (Surrey) UK. Played their single “Out of the Question” last month. Headlining NME Shockwaves Tour throughout UK in early 2007 as one of the most hotly-tipped indie rock bands in Britain at the moment. No album out yet, but I highly recommend checking out their batch of singles on their website. They describe themselves as a mix of the Beach Boys, The Kinks, Beta Band and Sigur Ros. One of my fave new groups of the year.

3. “Back Again” — Boy Kill Boy (CIVILIAN) Leytonstone, London / sound like the Killers with authentic British accents / caught their first big break during the NME New Music Tour during the summer of 2005 when the band filled in at the last minute to replace Nine Black Alps, whose lead singer had contracted the mumps / on the Fierce Panda label which has emerged in recent years as one of the leading independent record labels in the UK / another one of my fave albums of the year

/Rap /— Song Summary// /Commercials/ /Rap /— First Song Intro

4. “Chelsea Dagger” — The Fratellis (COSTELLO MUSIC) Glasgow band / name is Italian for “brothers” / jaunty pop garage sound / one of the most popular bands in the UK in 2006 with 4 chart-topping singles

5. “Eighteen” — ¡Forward, Russia! (GIVE ME A WALL) Leeds / played them a few months ago on the Armitage Shanks show / titles of all tracks on their debut CD are numbers / one of the bands at the front of the huge New Yorkshire indie rock scene in Sheffield and Leeds / playing on Thursday, November 30 at the Mile End Cultural Centre in Montréal and Friday, December 1 at the Horseshoe Tavern in Toronto

6. “Rootless Tree” — Damien Rice (9) My fave single on the brilliant second album by the singer from County Kildare, Ireland. Ethereal vocals harmonizing with him are those of Lisa Hannigan. This is the rare kind of music that takes you on a journey and has been known to bring a tear to even the most wizened old sod.

/ / /Rap /— Song Summary// /Commercials/ /Rap /— Brief shout-outs to two Montreal-based friends of the Armitage Shanks show: The Mod Club Wednesday nights at Club Vinyl 2109 Bleury (corner Sherbrooke) went two weeks ago and will return again soon / Lee spinning cool mod tunes from the 1960s and 1970s thru some of today’s latest indie rock hits / London Café on CISM 89.3 FM Tuesday nights 9:00 – 10:30 PM / featuring the same music as I do / the host Mélanie is highly knowledgeable about the UK indie rock scene and if you fancy what I play for you on my show, you shouldn’t be missing her weekly show either / First Song Intro

7. “The Truth That Hurts” — The Others (INWARD PARTS) Brighton and London. / Guerrilla gigs in which the band would play impromputu shows on underground “Tube” trains in London / lead singer Dominic Masters is one of Pete Dougherty’s entourage / the band’s eponymous debut album was one at the front of London’s New Cross music scene in 2005 / cheers go out to Lime Records who sent me an advance copy of their second album last week that is just about to be released / verdict is that the songwriting is much tighter on this album / several excellent singles on it / punkish sound / Dominic Master’s vocals reminiscent of Johnny Rotten circa Public Image Limited era with great Buzzcocks riffs / Lime Records offered me an interview with the band, which I will conduct in the near future.

8. “She’s Got Standards” — The Rifles (NO LOVE LOST) Walthamstow, London / full of cracking tunes and is a brilliant example of a tight guitar-driven indie rock band / sounds like the Rakes, Strokes, the Coral, the Libertines / album available in North America on import only at present / produced by Ian Broudie formerly of the Lightning Seeds

9. “Born in the UK” — Badly Drawn Boy (BORN IN THE UK) New single by Mercury Music Prize winner in 2000 / performed in Montréal twice at Club Soda / first time three and one-half hour gig / met Damon Gough on a flight to Manchester two years ago when I sat with his guitarist / talked with him briefly at the Manchester airport / was wearing a denim jacket with Québec spelled out in sequins on the reverse

/Rap /— Song Summary// /Commercials/ /Rap /— Song Intro /

Next show is Monday, December 11 on Drastic Plastic / In the meantime, keep listening to Drastic Plastic each and every Monday night with Doug Ford at 10 PM on CKUT and keep reading The Rock and Roll Report on http://www.rockandrollreport.com who kindly posts the playlists for all the Drastic Plastic shows a day or two following the broadcast. And check out my MySpace site at http://www.myspace.com/armitageshanksmusic . This is Armitage Shanks saying goodnight and remember, I’m just taking the piss.

10. “The City is at Standstill” — Liam Frost and the Slowdown Family (SHOW ME HOW THE SPECTRES DANCE) Manchester singer-songwriter very much in the vein of Badly Drawn Boy. I was gobsmacked to discover that Liam Frost is all of 22 years old: his voice and demeanour is that of someone with decades more experience living, loving and losing.

11. “Once Upon a Time” — The Boyfriends (THE BOYFRIENDS) Four piece band from London, sound very much like Morrissey or even more like one of the most underrated British indie rock bands of the 1990s, Gene. They headlined the John Peel stage at Glastonbury in 2005 where Morrissey caught their gig and made them the opening act on his ensuing 2006 European tour. Their debut album was released last month in the UK.

12. “Herculean” — The Good, The Bad & The Queen (SINGLE) New project by Blur frontman Damon Albarn with Paul Simonon of the Clash and ex-Verve guitarist Simon Tong. An album, co-produced by Danger Mouse is scheduled to be released in January 2007 / This stunning single is unmistakenly framed by Damon’s unique vocals.

13. “Blasphomy” — Unknown Artist (SINGLE) Novelty single by an unknown Cockney vocalist

Record Review: The Snitches- “Black Book” (Indie 2005)

Tuesday, November 28th, 2006

Snitches_black_book_sc The Montreal music scene is definitely growing in leaps and bounds but as usual with any “scene” there is no definable sound that you can point to. The only thing all these bands have in common is the city they sleep in. The Snitches are a band from Montreal, true but really that’s not why this is a great record (OK maybe a little bit why). What these guys have going for them is something a lot of “indie” bands seem to forget about: absolutely great songs!

While The Snitches certainly have enough indie cred to keep up with the best of them, their 2005 release “Black Book” is full of an amazing variety of styles that gets stronger with each listen. At first you might consider lead off track “Come On Back, Angeline” to be your favourite until “Kick in the Head” sticks in your brain or “Blink.” And just when you’re all pumped up about those rockers you slip on the headphones and fall head over eye sockets in love with the gorgeous psychedelic slow rocker “See You Tonight” and once again you shake your head in amazement.

This is primo, first grade rock and roll that just happens to come from my own hometown. Pick up your copy at Sugartune, a very cool source for Montreal indie rock and roll. Expect to hear more about Sugartune and some interesting plans with The Rock and Roll Report in the near future. It’s all good.

Video of the day: The Grapes of Wrath - “Peace of Mind”

Monday, November 27th, 2006

One of my favourite bands was The Grapes of Wrath. These guys had the hooks, the lyrics and the style that made them incredible both on record and in concert. Unfortunately they are no longer together but here is a taste of what they were like. The video is a bit lame but this song brings back incredible memories. From 1987!

The Bomp Store is now live!

Monday, November 27th, 2006

I don’t normally like to publicize something like a record label’s brand new online store but Bomp Records holds a special place in my heart. As one of the greatest indie rock labels of all time and the creation of the late great Greg Shaw, Bomp continues to amaze me and Suzi Shaw has managed to keep the mailorder biz growing to become one of the prime places to buy cool rock and roll. Now Bomp is pleased to announce that their brand new Bomp Store is live and accepting your business. Check it out. There are some incredibly cool records just waiting for a place to be played loud.

Record Review: Galore - Amplifier (Bhurr Records 2006)

Thursday, November 23rd, 2006

Galore_amplifier Does this ever happen to you? You get a new CD and the first song is so good that you keep playing it while pretty much ignoring the rest of the CD for a week or so? Then you finally decide to turn off “repeat” and plow through the rest of the songs to see if they are all that good? Well that’s what happened to me with Amplifier by Galore. The lead off track “She’s an Elevator” is so good that I literally ignored the rest of the record and even played it on Rock and Roll Report Radio last Monday. I finally managed to pull myself away from that amazingly cool tune to check out the rest of the CD and what a amanzingly great CD it is!

Galore is a Toronto band that emerged from the ashes of some great Canadian indie bands including one of my personal faves, Cool Blue Halo. I knew I was in for a treat just based on “Elevator” and the fact that Moe Berg, a power pop icon in my opinion produced the record and oh man was I right. Galore have managed to pack a lot of different musical styles on this CD but all the songs contain great, great hooks that keep things fun and rockin. Aside from “Elevator” check out “Teen Rebellion Machine”, “The Amanda Effect” and “Come On X 3″ for some amazing rock and roll. A great CD. Just can’t decide which song to play on the next radio show! Check out their MySpace page for a listen to what they have to offer.

You can buy the CD at the Burr Records site.

Rock and Roll Report Radio Playlist for November 20th, 2006

Wednesday, November 22nd, 2006

Well, except for a minor microphone problem at the beginning of the show I think it wen’t pretty well. Check my previous post for info on how to download the show for this week only. After that you can listen to it but only streaming from the CKUT website.

As I mentioned on the show, I came across all of these bands except for the Blue Van in the last month and had never heard any of the songs played before yet already they are constantly played at home and on my iPod. Who dares say rock is dead! Here’s what I played (Song/Band/Album):

  1. "Monkey" - Poets & Pornstars - S/T (Karmagun Records 2006): LA’s favourite band and with songs like this I can see why. Uptempo, cool lyrics, excellent production. The perfect song to kick off the show. What woman can resist being asked to be your monkey baby?
  2. "Sin" - Daphne - S/T (Indie 2006): Named after the cute one from Scooby Doo (come on guys admit it!), this song has been in heavy rotation in my brain since I got it about a week ago. I love this tune, a great car song.
  3. "Tweaking the Fine Tune" - Jonathan Bright - Radio Free Tennessee (Indie 2004): Everybody I have played this song for has loved it. Amazing EP. Really cool stuff. Another keeper.
  4. "She’s An Elevator" - Galore - Amplifier (Bhurr Records 2006): What can I say? This song hooked me within about 2 seconds and when I saw that it was produced by Moe Berg of Pursuit of Happiness fame I quickly new why. Formed from the ashes of several Canadian bands including the late, great Cool Blue Halo, this song to me represents a lot of what I love in my rock and roll. Amazing stuff.
  5. "Tonight" - The Fags - Light ‘Em Up (Idol Records 2006): With a name like The Fags you’d better be good and these guys from Detroit are just that. The first single is "Rockstar" but I love "Tonight." Sounds like a raunchy Cheap Trick track.
  6. "Someone Else’s Name" - Red Seven - Anywhere But Here (Indie 2006) - I loved the way I came across this band through a recommendation from a podcaster and I cannot believe that they are both unsigned and that this song is not huge on commercial rock radio. A real shame.
  7. "She Put the Shock (In My Rock and Roll)" - Crash Kelly - Electric Satisfaction (Bhurr Records 2006): Produced by Gilby Clarke, this Toronto band is great, classic hook-laden hard rock. This song is another classic hard rock tale of girl gone bad. Check out their website. Cool stuff.
  8. "Come On Back, Angeline" - The Snitches - Black Book (Indie 2005): Amazing Montreal band. Amazing album. Hard to choose what to play but this song is just fantastic.
  9. "Don’t Slander Me" - The DT’s - Hard Soul Hits Volume 1(Get Hip 2006): I don’t know what is more impressive: the incredibly cool selection of a Roky Ericson song to cover or Diana Young-Blanchard’s voice. Powerful stuff. Pure heart and soul. Incredible.
  10. "Drink in Her Hand" - The Blessings - Bare Bones (Basementboy Records 2006): I love this song because it’s so visual. You can just see this drunk chick in your mind. Great country-tinged rock and roll that reminds me of Sticky Fingers/Exile-era Stones.
  11. "Independence" - The Blue Van - Dear Independence (TVT Records 2006): Original rock and roll from Holland. I love these guys. This album is a follow up to one of my favourite records last year, their debut "Art of Rolling."
  12. "Louise" - Mondo Topless - Take it Slow (Get Hip 2006): The garage rock kings are back with an incredible version of the little played Paul Revere and the Raiders classic. Great background vocals.
  13. "City Beat" - Jana Peri - Catching Flies With Vinegar (Hot Jupiter Records 2006): All New Yawk attitude. Cool lyrics, great guitar. This comes from a very strong record that I have been playing quite a bit at Rock and Roll Report HQ.
  14. "Feelin’ Alright" - Stimulator - S/T (Indie 2005): I wasn’t quite sure about this band with their heavy electronic dance beats and stuff but once in awhile you have to venture outside your comfort zone and Stimulator is pretty cool. Reminds me a bit of Missing Persons (remember them?) and "Feelin’ Alright" is an amazingly hooky song that sticks in your brain as soon as you have heard it.
  15. "Mr. Cupid’s Puppet Show" - The Winnerys - Daily Urban Times (Rainbow Quartz 2006): It’s 1967 all over again with this amazing Spanish band. If you love the Beatles you will love the Winnerys.

There you have it. Next show is on December 4th, 2006. Thanks for listening and I’ll catch you on the air again soon.

Sonific Releases Updated Beta Site With Music Widgets For Over 20 New Sites

Sonific releases updated beta site with music widgets for over 20 new sites such as Smugmug, Typepad, Wordpress, Livejournal, Hi5, Piczo, and Google Pages.

Sonific LLC today announced the latest release of their SongSpots service offering increased support for many new online destinations where Sonific users can add SongSpots, and play the song of their choice on their own web properties.

With the new release, Sonific supports Blogger / Blogspot, Facebook, Flickr, Friendster, Google, Google Pages, Hi5, ILCU, LiveJournal, MovableType, Multiply, MySpace, NetVibes, Piczo, ProfileHeaven, SmugMug, Terapad, TypePad, Xanga, WidgetBox, and WordPress, making it easy for almost 200 Million users to integrate full-length songs into their web properties, for free, yet fully authorized by the rights holders.

Sonific’s recently launched SongSpot beta service has already attracted thousands of users in over 45 countries. SongSpots enables its users to create flash “widgets” that stream any track selected from a large database of music provided by music aggregators such as CDBaby and Big Fish Media, as well as from leading independent record labels such as Nettwerk Records (Canada) and Cooking Vinyl (UK). Many examples of SongSpots can be browsed at www.sonific.com.

In addition, Sonific has added API support for Google Gadgets, Typepad, Terapad, Google Gadgets, Livejournal, and WidgetBox, making it even easier to add music via the SongSpots tool since a user can now import the music directly from Sonific, straight into his own user account, thereby alleviating the need for cutting and pasting the code, and exposing the SongSpots service to a much wider audience. Sonific also announced the availability of a new, resizable ‘bubble’ flash player which is already getting raving responses from Sonific’s users.

Sonific’s co-founder and CTO, Gunnar Ostergren, comments: “The latest update shows where we are headed in terms of making our service even easier to use. Additional API support is in the works as well as more players and increased customization options. We will also offer co-branded or white-labeled versions of Sonific SongSpots, solving the dilemma many site operators are facing: their users are demanding music but free yet legal options are too hard to come by. By integrating our search engine, track preview, and SongSpots creation tools, site operators will soon be able to add our entire catalog and our widgets with a minimum of effort while taking full advantage of our music licenses”

Pony Boi Releases “Who Woulda Thought”

Who Woulda Thought that a boy growing up cropping tobacco in the backwoods of Charleston, South Carolina would end up as a successful TV show creator/producer and rap artist with his shows and songs heard around the world?

Pony Boi’s album Who Woulda Thought hit record stores across the country today. The self-proclaimed Hugh Hefner of Hip Hop doesn’t believe in making one hit song. All of his music comes from the heart; the whole album consists of songs that tell a story about who he is and what he has lived through. “Who Woulda Thought”… is a homage to the life he has lived, the women he has loved and the excitement of looking toward the future.

Pony Boi has already begun to see success with the release of his first single “Don’t Shake It” featuring Da Brat. The second single due to drop soon features special guest appearances from K-fed “X’” Shar Jackson and Guerilla Black.

Throughout his success as a creator and executive producer of shows on MTV and Spike TV, including “Sorority Life”, “Fraternity Life” and “10 Things Every Guy Should Experience”. Pony Boi has managed to keep himself grounded and not get caught up in the Hollywood craze. He is also currently writing a book about his life growing up in the south entitled Tobacco Row.

This album was in the making for about 10 years. Pony Boi finally felt that the rest of the world should hear it. He worked in studios from Los Angeles to Brooklyn with great people in the industry such as Guerilla Black, Da Brat, Marc 7 of Jurassic 5, Dyron and Buccweat, and Shar Jackson. There are also songs on this album produced by Charlemagne (Shyne, Talib Kweli), Grammy award winning Arden Altino (Alicia Keys), Big John and Dutch (Ice Cube, Sisqo).

Updated Recording Of Greener’s 1 Million Download “Christmas Song” To Benefit Lifebeat, The Music Industry Fights Aids Organization

Indie rock band, Greener, today announced the release of two fresh recordings of its popular Christmas Song, downloaded 1 million plus times since its release.

The demo version of “Christmas Song” was initially released five days before Christmas in 2004. The recording drew an enthusiastic response, to the tune of over 100,000 downloads by Christmas Day. Demand for the song grew rapidly, and by summer 2005, Christmas Song was downloaded over 1,000,000 times. This year, Greener, an unsigned band with a diverse catalog of songs, returned to the studio to put a professional polish on the demo arrangement of “Christmas Song” and to produce an acoustic rendering.

band members Troy Polsley (vocals/bass), Jason Cohen (guitars), Jeff Oddo (guitars), and Chris Wall (drums) have pledged a portion of the proceeds from “Christmas Song” sales to LIFEbeat, a music industry charity dedicated to reaching America’s youth with the message of HIV/AIDS prevention.

According to Cohen, “Greener is proud to contribute to LIFEbeat’s mission‹mobilizing the talents and resources of the music industry to raise AIDS awareness and provide support to the AIDS community.”

LIFEbeat Executive Director John Cannelli added, “We are grateful and touched by Greener’s generosity. It’s heartening to see a young band on the rise relate to the message of HIV/AIDS education and prevention deeply enough to take an action of this kind and we thank them. And, we love ‘Christmas Song!’ It’s a fresh and original approach to holiday music.”

Can Sound Harmoniously Embrace Emotions And Poetry?

The answer to this question is yes, if you’re listening to Alex Giordani’s debut album, Essence.

It’s an entirely new experience, not just for the artist but mostly for the listener. His music, which he describes as pop-rock with an orchestral sound, brings a refreshing new touch to nowadays music that surprises the skeptical who doubt the possibility of renovation in this saturated world. His different approach to music is expressed through his belief that “a song can be more than just four minutes of sounds and vocals, that for some it can become part of their life”.

In those four minutes, Alex can give his audience catchy songs like “Forget my faults”, “She knows” or “Somebody’s there” or moments of reflection through “I see dreams”, “Morning” or “White”. It’s a CD that can even be listened to randomly and there will still be a great song playing, whether it’s powerful rock with captivating guitar riffs or a soulful song marked by sublime piano tones.

Through his music you’ll be introduced to characters that could reflect anyone in the world… including yourself. Dreams, reality, weakness, strength, illusion, beliefs… Your most intimate moments and emotions are expressed here for you to lose your fear of opening yourself to the great adventure of being who you are, one among billions, but also unique… like your Essence. Have you already discovered yours?

Record Labels Take Note of MusicDish Network Artist Astrella Celeste

Astrella Celeste, daughter of the legendary Donovan and rising star in her own right, decided to reschedule the release of her highly anticipated mini-album as record labels began expressing serious interest in her. MusicDish Network has been promoting this pop/jazz/country singer & songwriter and her mini-album, “Blue Star,” since the beginning of the summer in preparation for its release on October 30th through Donovan’s new independent label, Donovan Discs.

As a result of intense interest by record labels in both the UK and US, Astrella Celeste and her management decided to pull the mini-album, delaying the release of what will now be a full-length album until the summer of 2007. Astrella is currently travelling to New York and Los Angeles in order to meet with label executives and assess her various offers. She will then join producer Yoad Nevo in his UK recording studio on November 6 to continue writing and recording tracks for the new CD.

In other news, Astrella was recently informed by the Montel Williams MS Foundation that her single ‘KISS’ would be included on the MS Music Fest compilation. All proceeds from the sales of the compilations will be donated to the Montel Williams MS Foundation, which was established in October 2000 to further the scientific study of the debilitating disease known as Multiple Sclerosis.

Astrella Celeste’s music captures the lyrical and relaxing spirit of her father’s music, whilst fusing jazz, pop and country in a way that is unique to her. Her songs are very personal, soulful and sensitive with a sweet, almost innocent quality that expresses a beautifully casual yet spiritual lifestyle.

Astrella’s career has been richly developed by working with other musicians in recording sessions, performances and/or home jams, amongst them David Gilmour, Brian Setzer, Donovan, Mark White, Happy Mondays, and Graham Nash, to name but a few. Musicians are drawn (almost moth-like!) to Astrella with the result that the credits for ‘Blue Star’ (the Spanish translation of Astrella Celeste) make for interesting reading: written by Astrella with Kevin Hunter (of Sheryl Crow fame), the record is produced by Yoad Nevo (Sugababes, Goldfrapp), string arrangements are by the legendary John Cameron (Les Miserables, Jose Carreras) with Rat Scabies on drums, Andy Hobson (Pretenders) on bass and Carmen Squire on rhythm guitar and BVs.

Kobo Town Successfully Debuts Independence In Toronto

Toronto-based roots-calypso act, Kobo Town began a month-long series of events last week in Toronto in celebration of their new album Independence, available to the public next week on November 14th. Their New York City release party and debut performance will be on November 14th at the Listen Liberally showcase hosted by Organic Entertainment and MusicDish Network in connection with the NYC chapter of Drinking Liberally. The party will start 7:00PM at Club Midway, located at 25 Ave. B in Manhattan.

Kobo Town’s record release party held at the Lula Lounge on November 2nd attracted over 250 attendees, including such notable guest as
* radio personalities Jarrod Lal, host of Island Breeze at CIUT; Verylia, host of Limin’ in the African Diaspora; and Garvia Bailey, host of the CBC’s Big City Small World

The event was covered by various media outlets, including Ryan Patrick of Pride Magazine (Canada’s national black and Afro-Caribbean Magazine). Tony Shivpershad from the Live Music Report and Wendy Atkins of CanadaJams.ca.

Kobo Town’s music draws its inspiration from traditional calypso, roots reggae and dub poetry. Named after the vibrant and turbulent neighborhood in old Port-of-Spain, Trinidad, where calypso was born, the group strives to recover the social conscience, satirical storytelling and strong acoustic/organic rhythms that characterized Trinidadian music in the past. For members of the eight-piece outfit, the name suggests an origin as well as a destination.

Independence was co-produced by Lyndon Livingstone (David Rudder, Andre Tanker, Mighty Scrunter) and Drew Gonsalves at the Razorshop in Maraval, Trinidad. Independence will be available for download through CD Baby, iTunes, Music Discovery Network, Calabash Music and select online retailers. MIDEM announces that Claude Nobs, Founder & CEO of the world-renowned Montreux Jazz Festival, will be honoured with the MIDEM Personality of the Year Award. Claude Nobs, will receive the trophy during a gala dinner for industry VIP executives at MIDEM in Cannes on Monday, 22 January 2007.

“For over 40 years music has been at the heart of Claude Nobs’ life,” says MIDEM Director Dominique Leguern. “His enthusiasm and exceptional love of all types of music have forged the Montreux Jazz Festival not only into a unique event, but also into one of the world’s most culturally diverse. “I am very honoured to have been chosen as MIDEM Personality of the Year and would like to share this trophy with the musicians, record labels, producers and of course the public who have had confidence in me for the past 40 years,” comments Claude Nobs.

A passionate lover of jazz, Claude Nobs began his career as an accountant for the Montreux Office de Tourisme where he also worked on promoting tourism for the town.

In the ’60s, during a trip to New York, Claude Nobs met Nesuhi Ertegun, who was the President of Atlantic Records at that time. Ertegun introduced him to the singer Roberta Flack, who he immediately invited to perform at the Rose d’Or in Montreux.

Having successfully persuaded Aretha Franklin to sing for the first time in Europe, Claude Nobs founded the Montreux Jazz Festival in 1967. The initial three-day event was an overnight hit and quickly became the international meeting place for jazz-lovers from around the world.

In 1973, Claude Nobs was named International Director for WEA, which grouped the American record labels Warner, Elektra and Atlantic. In 1977, the festival ran for 23 days and proposed an eclectic line-up of music. Artists from an array of musical trends performed: jazz geniuses (Sonny Rollins, Quincy Jones, Count Basie, Ella Fitzgerald, Miles Davis), rock gurus (Bob Dylan, Frank Zappa, The Pretenders) as well as international celebrities Joao Gilberto, Tom Jobim, Leonard Cohen, Johnny Cash, Van Morrison, B.B. King, Ray Charles, etc….

In addition to the Montreux Jazz Festival, Claude Nobs opened a company specialising in European tours for international artists. For over ten years he coordinated tours for artists including: The Rolling Stones, Fleetwood Mac, AC/DC, Neil Young, Paul Simon, Bette Midler, etc…. He also worked for Atari, Warner Communications and contributed to the launch of numerous Warner Music artists who emerged on the Montreux Jazz Festival stage. In 2001 he stepped down as a full-time Warner Music employee.

In the ’90s, Claude Nobs shared the directorship of the Montreux Jazz Festival with the renowned producer and musician Quincy Jones. Today the festival continues to attract 250,000 music fans each year.

In December 2006, Claude Nobs will receive the French cultural award ‘Commandeur dans l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres’ (’Commander of the Order of Arts and Letters’).

The final full day of WOMEX sees a sold-out trade fair, bustling conferences, another night of dazzling showcases open to delegates and the public - and the biggest and most dynamic WOMEX in our 12-year history.

2006 marked the welcome return of WOMEX to its 2003 home at FIBES in Sevilla, Spain. Mayor Don Alfredo Sánchez Monteseirín, Cultural Commissioner Juan Carlos Marset and their energetic team at ICAS (the Sevilla Insituto de la Cultura y las Artes) have, in words, warmth and deeds, made Sevilla an ideal home for a multicultural event of this size and scope. Rock and Roll Report Radio is on tonight, November 20th, 2006!

Monday, November 20th, 2006

Just a reminder that another dose of Rock and Roll Report Radio is all set to go tonight from 10:00 - 11:00 PM EST on CKUT FM here in Montreal. If you can’t listen live you can always download the show in podcast form for 1 week after it airs. Just look for the Drastic Plastic Program in the archives.

Tonight’s show is all indie and unsigned bands and will feature Poets & Pornstars, Daphne, Jonathan Bright, Galore, The Fags, Red Seven and more. The amazing thing about tonight’s show is until a few weeks ago I didn’t know one of these songs. This is all stuff that I have recieved since the last show and I had a ton of great stuff to choose from so don’t tell me rock and roll is dead! I will also be logged onto MySpace (www.myspace.com/rockandrollreport) while on the air so if you want to post a comment about any of the music I am playing or you have a band to suggest just pop me a line and I’ll see what I can do.

The next show by the way is tentatively scheduled for December 4th and will probably be a "best of" type show.

Tune in, turn on and turn it up! That’s all you gotta do.

Record Review: The Blessings - “Bare Bones” (Basementboy Records)

Monday, November 20th, 2006

Blessings Shit kicking rock and roll. I’m not really sure why that is the description I apply to The Blessings and their debut album “Bare Bones” but it seems appropriate. Somewhat a cross between Sticky Fingers/Exile on Main Street Stones with early Black Crowes and Georgia Satellites, this CD is a great, honky tonk barrel ride of raunchy, boogie-woogie swamp rock (how’s that for a description!).

Hailing from Hollywood, the boys of The Blessings have some absolutely first rate, fun rock and roll on this album and they are also the authors of one of the greatest lines in a song when they sing in “Drink in Her Hand”

“In the bar or all alone
She knocks them back like she’s George Jones”

Just that line alone tells me that these guys know what rock and roll is all about. Have a listen and I know you’ll agree with me. Great stuff.
