Voodoo Music Experience Returns To Its Rightful Home In New Orleans’ City Park For Eighth Anniversary

Monday, July 31st, 2006

(PRESS RELEASE) As the line-up for the eighth annual VOODOO MUSIC EXPERIENCE continues to be revealed, Wu-Tang Clan, The Flaming Lips, My Chemical Romance, Social Distortion, Kings of Leon, Ozomatli, Secret Machines, Blue October, Brazilian Girls, Ferry Corsten, Broken Social Scene, Drive-By Truckers, Jack’s Mannequin, Yerba Buena and The Rentals are the latest performers to join the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Duran Duran. Stay tuned for news about additional acts to be added in the coming months, including a special Louisiana element featuring and honoring the music of the region.

The annual New Orleans celebration is set to take place over its traditional Halloween weekend (Saturday, October 28 and Sunday, October 29) and music fans can once again look forward to a diverse line-up of talent reflecting the multitude of cultures which define the city. This year’s marks not only the return of the two-day musical convergence to New Orleans, but the return of the event to its rightful home in City Park, after being displaced and relocated by last year’s hurricanes.

The festival site–located just miles from New Orleans’ famed French-Quarter–will feature six performance areas and a theatric VIP LOA Lounge complete with full-bar service and other special amenities. Doors will open at 9:00 AM on both days with music commencing at 11:00 AM. Free parking is available at multiple locations adjacent to the venue. For those looking for alternate means of transportation, street car and bus schedules along with route information is available at www.norta.com. Additionally, shuttles will be available from two downtown locations and also from Baton Rouge. For additional shuttles details, go to the Travel Section at www.voodoomusicfest.com.

Playboy does Ozzfest

Monday, July 31st, 2006

In the "strange bedfellows" department (pardon the pun!) I see from the Playboy website that they have partnered with this year’s edition of Ozzfest (as an extension to their popular Miss Ozzfest feature) to bring you "The Girls of Ozzfest." Between now and August 18th the Playboy site will feature a "sexy metal maiden" every Friday from "the summer’s most extreme tour." This week they are featuring Courtney Kidd.

I vow to stay on top of this story all month if I have to dammit, all in the name of rock and roll! (thanks for the tip Day in Rock)

The site allows artists to upload music, videos, images, concert schedules, and more. Artists even have the ability to create their own online radio station.

The Latest Technology To Be Used For Lollapalooza And Austin City Limits Music Festival

Front Gate Solutions of Austin, TX today announced the launch of its ScanOne Access Control Solution. The application will be at the core of an extensive gate control management system that will be used at the 2006 Lollapalooza Music Festival in Chicago’s Grant Park August 4-6. A similar setup will be implemented for the three-day Austin City Limits Music Festival in September an event that attracted over 200,000 music fans last year.

"Counterfeiters look for opportunities to beat the system," offers Mellie Price, President and founder of Front Gate Solutions. "We have a responsibility to provide the highest level of security to our clients, which is why we are constantly developing tools like ScanOne."

Access Control Systems are used to both prevent unauthorized access to events and to monitor trends in entry activity. ScanOne has been designed to work in tandem with Front Gate Solutions’ AdmitOne box office solution and Backstage event management application.

"Counterfeit tickets are a common problem in the festival business," notes Michelle Alldredge of Capital Sports & Entertainment, producers of Lollapalooza and Austin City Limits Music Festival. "We are excited to implement a solution for our upcoming festivals that will both give us real time attendance counts and keep holders of counterfeit tickets from entering our shows."

Independents Call On EC To Act On Demerger Verdict In SonyBMG Case

Following an extra-ordinary IMPALA Board meeting earlier this week in London, the independents emphasise that the European court completely annulled the Commission’s 2004 approval of SonyBMG. In a categoric judgement last Thursday, the judges found on much more than simple technicalities. The court identified fundamental problems that go to the heart of the merger and can’t be readily fixed because the music market already suffers from collective dominance. The judgement vindicates the original findings of the Commission that it did indeed have the evidence to block SonyBMG. It is difficult to see how a re-application would be successful. IMPALA points out that mere fact that the SonyBMG house is already built doesn’t mean it won’t have to be pulled down.

The independents are also concerned that BMG publishing may be sold to another major. A trade sale of any major publisher to another would strengthen existing collective dominance in publishing and the functioning of the collective societies, online licensing and syncronisation markets. IMPALA takes the view that any such move would be unable to obtain regulatory approval.

IMPALA will put Sony, Bertlesmann and the European Commission on notice that prompt action is required and that they take the view that SonyBMG must now be demerged. The independents emphasise that this is a constructive move and offer to work with the Commission and the majors to create a viable and competitive music market.

MusicDish Network Promotes 60’s Love Child Astrella-Celeste

MusicDish, an Internet music magazine publisher and artist marketing/development firm, is proud to announce the addition of Pop/Jazz singer Astrella Celeste to the MusicDish Network roster. Combining a variety of online viral marketing strategies, the MusicDish Network will be coordinating a broad campaign in support of her debut album "Blue Star" (the Spanish translation of Astrella Celeste).

The ultimate 60’s love child, Astrella-Celeste is the daughter of the ‘British Bob Dylan’ Donovan, who wrote ‘Catch the Wind,’ ‘Mellow Yellow’ and ‘Hurdy Gurdy Man,’. Having recorded with her father and opened for him on his Beat Café tour, Astrella-Celeste is now entering the spotlight in her own right. On September 25th, she will be releasing her single ‘Dream’ to coincide with her debut EP "Blue Star" issued in the UK, Ireland & Internet on Donovan’s new label, Donovan Discs. Astrella-Celeste wrote the album with Kevin Hunter of Sheryl Crow fame and was produced by influential music producer Yoad Nevo.

"Astrella Celeste’s ‘Dream’ Combines a fusion of jazz, pop and country wearing such female icons as Liz Phair, Shania Twain and Natalie Merchant on her sleeves," noted June Caldwell with Bryan Farrish Radio Promotion.

The MusicDish Network will conduct an extensive saturated marketing campaign, combining PR/brand development, syndicated marketing and online street teaming. In addition, Astrella will be aggressively pushed on social networking sites such as MySpace, Live Digital and TagWorld, while promoting her single and video "Dream" through a viral distribution campaign on major file sharing networks such as eDonkey.

Having performed on stage since childhood (releasing a single in Italy aged 8 which led to the Pope asking to meet her), Astrella spent her youth in acting schools and dance troupes before working with her father providing backing vocals and touring with him. Her career has since been richly developed by working with other musicians in recording sessions, performances and/or home jams, amongst them David Gillmore, Brian Setzer, Donovan, Mark White, Happy Mondays, and Graham Nash to name but a few.

The World Is Set To Fall In Mad, Mad Love With Aussie Folk-pop Gypsy Lisa Richards

The Australian-born, Texas-based songstress Lisa Richards releases her fourth album Mad Mad Love, on 1st September.

The new album confronts love in all in its guises as bringer of great joy along with intense pain, from the personal to the universal and the earthly to the planetary. Mad Mad Love contains two cover versions, a spellbinding rendition of Lou Reed’s Satellite of Love, and a riotous take on Rags and Old Iron, an Oscar Brown Jr song most famously performed by Nina Simone.

Lisa recorded the album in New York and Austin, Texas. Brooklyn-based studio whiz and multi-instrumentalist Tim Bright (who also co-wrote several songs with Lisa) brings out the unique richness of her voice and song writing, while providing complex musical textures, utilizing slide guitar, harmonica, violin and cello. In Austin, Craig Ross (producer of Spoon and Patty Griffin) and Lisa’s husband Jeff May offered stark, organic and hauntingly beautiful arrangements. Billy Masters - who toured with Suzanne Vega and Dar Williams produced two tracks, using loops and atmospheric, multi-layered guitars.

It is a sign of Lisa’s growth as an artist and acceptance of diversity (a little clumsy I think) that she has surrounded herself with a number of esteemed musicians on this album. These include John Deley (Dido’s band), Tim Luntzel (Bright Eyes) and Dan Reiser (Norah Jones’ band, The Little Willies). The result is a rapturous and catchy collection of sublime love songs.

Church school bans Lennon classic

Friday, July 21st, 2006

Johnlennonsinglesimagine
This kind of thing really burns my rope. The BBC reports that a church school in Devon, England has withdrawn John Lennon’s song "Imagine" from an end of term school show "after teachers ruled that its lyrics were anti-religious." What freakin’ year is this anyway? WKRP in Cincinnati dealt with this exact issue best when a religious leader complained against this exact song. I remember him complaining to Arthur "Big Guy" Carlson, who was a religious man himself how the song was blasphemous because it said that "there was no heaven" to which Mr. Carlson replied: "That’s not what (John Lennon) says. He says "Imagine there is no heaven" which is quite a different thing altogether.

Good one Big Guy. Sigh…

Wayback Machine News!

Wednesday, July 19th, 2006

Direct from the Bomp! list:

Hey everyone, I’m happy to announce that there’s a new crew in place
to pilot the Wayback Machine on future missions. Don’t worry, I’m
still the captain of this ship. But I’m adding a couple of first
mates: Ryan "Gilligan" Katastrophe and Scott "Doc" Lasser. Doc will be
joining me on the show tonight, and Ryan next week. I think the plan
right now is to have them alternate as co-host or whatever every-other
week or so, and then about once a month they’ll do the show
themselves, together. That should be interesting! Then I’ll probably
still do the show solo once a month or so, too. Anyway, I’m just kinda
bored doing it all by myself and I feel it’s time for a change. Plus,
it’s time the show got a kick in the pants and I think this will do
it. It will also help relieve the strain a bit for me and actually
give me a week off now and then, something I’ll welcome gladly.

Happy birthday to me,

CBGB To Close On September 30th

After over 30 years, the legendary rock club CBGB will be closing for good on September 30th, 2006.

CB’s, as it is universally and fondly known, opened its doors in 1973, making it NYC’s oldest continuously- operating rock venue. Owner Hilly Kristal originally intended the club to showcase country, bluegrass and blues (hence the acronym), but the lack of places for unsigned bands to perform in New York at the time made CB’s a magnet for the punk and art-rock scenes that were emerging downtown. Throughout the 70’s, such seminal artists as The Ramones, Talking Heads, Blondie, The Patti Smith Group, Television and Suicide performed at CB’s regularly, and the club served as an incubator for what would become the most influential music of the era.

When punk metamorphosed into hardcore in the 80’s, CB’s remained on the city’s cutting edge, offering a home for The Gorilla Biscuits, Agnostic Front, The Cro-Mags, Sick Of It All, H20, Murphy’s Law, Leeway and the other pillars of the NYHC movement.

As the New York nightlife industry grew bigger and more cutthroat in the 90’s, CB’s remained an endearingly stubborn throwback, sticking firm to the open-door booking policy that first welcomed its inaugural class of rebels - whoever you are, whatever you do, your band can play at CBGB. In a downtown scene increasingly governed by fashion and status, CB’s has zealously adhered to the formula that made it meaningful, by refusing to apply stylistic filters to its bookings, welcoming all comers to sink or swim on their own merits.

A much-publicized altercation with their landlord in mid-2005 led to an a star-studded benefit concert in Washington Square Park, and even Mayor Bloomberg vocally led his support to the little club that had developed, over the decades, into a globally-recognized cultural institution.

However, despite the universal outpouring of love, and numerous attempts to resolve the matter legally, Kristal has been unable to arrive at terms with the building’s owner, and a three-decade musical legacy will come to an end in just a few short months.

European Court Annuls SONY/BMG Merger

In a landmark ruling which will set important legal and political precedents, the European Union’s Court of First Instance has overturned the European Commission’s 2004 authorisation of the Sony/BMG music merger.

The Luxembourg Court pointed out that the Commission’s analysis of the Sony BMG case was left wanting in various fundamental respects. It contained a series of legal and economic errors which renders the decision null and void.

The Commission waved the merger through unconditionally in 2004, creating the world’s second largest music company and putting 80% of the worldwide music market into the hands of four media conglomerates. This was despite widespread industry objection and previous market assessments that further concentration could not be tolerated. The independents highlighted a catalogue of fundamental mistakes which left the Court in no doubt that it had to overturn the Commission’s approval. The Court also ordered the Commission to pay three quarters of IMPALA’s costs.

This is a victory for music and cultural diversity. It is the start of market recovery. The independents take the view that the judgement underlines the need for any assessment of mergers in creative sectors to take into account the economic, social and cultural specificities of markets. IMPALA also emphasises that a review of the merger process in terms of the rights of third party market operators is required. IMPALA had made the case to the Court that the merger clearance process is biased towards large corporations and lacks transparency. Third parties who oppose a merger have few rights compared to the notifying parties. They also have extremely limited access to the Commission’s file. This makes proper decision making is very difficult.

The parties will now have to consider their options. An appeal to the EU’s highest court, also in Luxembourg, would be difficult as it can only be made on grounds of law. The merger will go back to the Commission but the independents believe that the problems highlighted by the Court right across the music market are too fundamental to be repaired. Without competition clearance Sony/BMG would have to dismantle.

The Court’s ruling will also thwart any other attempts to merge such as between EMI and Warner. It now looks extremely unlikely that they would obtain the competition clearances necessary. IMPALA will continue to oppose any further concentration.

Salvation Army Comples First Term Of Free After-School Online Music Lessons Using WorkshopLive Technology

Declaring its initial online music lessons after-school project a solid success, The Salvation Army has announced plans to continue the free program, with the view of expanding it beyond the Berkshires region. A June 22 recital demonstrated the fruits of the innovative public-private collaboration among the Salvation Army and supporting organizations, including WorkshopLive Inc., Pittsfield Cooperative Bank, Guardian/Berkshire Life, Berkshire Community College, Pittsfield Rotary Club and the Pittsfield Cultural Council.

"From the very start, this program was conceived as a possible prototype for adoption elsewhere in the northeast, and nationally. This early experience convinces us that we are on the right track," said Capt. Scott Peabody, of the Pittsfield Corps. "The WorkshopLive approach to online learning proved extremely effective in our music lab. Students found it easy to use, and their progress was remarkable. My guess is that they never knew online music lessons could be this much fun."

Capt. Peabody told attendees at the concert/recital of student musicians that the Pittsfield Corps is now accepting for the second 12-week term of online music lessons, which begins in the fall.

"Music education has been proven to lift students¹ learning abilities in all subjects," said David Smolover, founder and CEO of WorkshopLive. "The Salvation Army has provided a valuable service in many ways, giving students a constructive after-school activity that is both fun and helpful to their quality of life. To see these students performing after just 11 weeks of lessons was a most rewarding experience. We are proud to be partners in this most worthwhile endeavor."

Available to those in grades 4-8, this new beginner program for keyboard lessons uses the teaching technology of WorkshopLive, the leading provider of online music lessons. WorkshopLive provided the course content and software; music interns from Berkshire Community College supervised the practice sessions; and Berkshire Life (Guardian) provided the hardware. This program is funded in part by grants from Pittsfield Cooperative Bank, Pittsfield Rotary Club, and the Pittsfield Cultural Council.

IRMA Facing A Backlash Over Their New Charts In Ireland

Amidst the quiet summer lull and the distraction of the World cup, IRMA - the Irish Record Label Association, sneaked through the biggest change in the chart rules in Ireland since 1962.

Unfortunately, they failed to consult independant labels who are furious that they were not informed or fore-warned to the new change, which includes download sales in the weekly single charts.

An online petition has been setup for independent labels which calls on IRMA to suspend the new charts until the wider industry is consulted and satisfied that the new chart rule change benefits all in the industry, not just a select few.

The first Irish Single charts that includes download sales are as follows:

The Wave Celebrates It’s Second Anniversary

The Wave (sister station to WCH Radio - St. Louis), celebrates it’s second anniversary this month.

As part of a series of celebrations for the St. Louis based hip-hop internet station, we decided to salute St. Louis artists, who have really embraced the station over the past two years, according to John O’Day the station’s CEO.

We’re planning a special show featuring St. Louis artists from rap to reggae.  We wanted to showcase St. Louis’ artist to our worldwide audience, and since we are an Internet station we can do that. Says O’Day.

St. Louis is rich in music, but does not always get the opportunity to showcase it’s talent, and so we thought that during our second anniversary this would be a good time to do so.  O’Day said. The show will also feature several former St. Louisans, whose heart is still in the Gateway City.

The show will begin at 7pm (cst), on July 19th, 2006 and can be heard by logging on to www.stationdirectory.com, scroll down to the rap category and click on The Wave.

The show "A saLOUte to St. Louis", follows another special show the station did earlier this month that featured only MySpace artists. That was fun, according to O"Day, who said there have been request for repeats of that show.

The Wave would also like to welcome it"s newest DJ, DJ Realz, who actually joins the station from his studio in Raleigh, North Carolina.  Hey it"s the Internet!!

Here is the second album of the delectable Marykate. Not just your typical digipak this CD is a veritable artistic treasure containing 2 booklets with one containing 31 pages but the contents are in unison. The meticulous production of Roger Moutenot (Beulah, Yo La Tengo, Joseph Arthur) and the incredible Jill Sobule give a brilliant brightness to the songs of this wonderful New Yorker. A host of talented friends (Brad Jones, Jim Boggia, Matthew Caus) give 1-800 Bankrupt a festive flavour to the record. The songs run literally to a rhythm of subtle vocal harmonies and other delicate and luminous arrangements. A jewel in the crown, this is a magnificent album by one of the most talented female performers today.
Have a listen to Stay and Things are too good (they’re bound to go bad) for a sample of “1-800 Bankrupt.”
