Record Review: The Vines - Vision Valley

Thursday, June 22nd, 2006

By Ari Schwartz

Vision_valley_1
“There’s no point in doin’ what I’ve done” sings a rejuvenated Craig Nicholls in The Vines new album ‘Vision Valley’. And just like that, they’re back!

It seems as though The Vines have found a way out of a 2 year long nightmare (bad press, bad behaviour, sickness, and breaking up), and into a recording studio full of courage and passion. It would have been very easy for EMI to have found a bunch of B-sides, put them into the mixer, and then release them as ‘rare material’. We would be able to sit back and feel sorry for the once great Vines. Instead, Craig Nicholls has come up with 13 scorching energy driven rock, punk, pop, ballad, psychedelic- call them what you want- songs. In a stunning turn-around, third album ‘Vision Valley’ is easily the best music these guys have released to date.

The album kicks off with the hand-clapping, guitar driven ‘Anysound’. Craig Nicholls wastes no time in telling all his critics what’s on his mind; “I am a Vine, all twisted and frayed”. The beauty of the song is that it is so dam catchy that even his worst critics can’t help but tap their feet along. Three explosive tracks later comes a slower, melodically based ballad. Full of three part harmonies, string arrangements, and strumming acoustic guitars. The title track doesn’t fall into the boring ‘strings/acoustic’ ballad category. Rather, the strings compliment Nicholls stunning voice, singing an even more stunning melody.

‘Don’t Listen To The Radio’ is pop at its finest; catchy rhythms with catchy melodies that refuse to lose their edge after the first listen. It’s odd, Craig Nicholls can write a song that lasts only 78 seconds, and it can be better crafted, more melodic, and have more passion then any song your local radio station will play all week. ‘Gross Out’ is The Vines back at their best; ruthless in their assault on pop music.

The second half of the album gets louder and more complex in terms of song structure. Sometimes lyrics only get in the way of the sheer grunt and attitude of a rock song, and in songs like ‘ Fuk Yeh’ and ‘Futuretarded’ the lyrics might not make any sense, but the music speaks volumes. This glorious comeback album ends with ‘Spaceship’, a six minute psychedelic epic that provides listeners with a view into what Nicholls might have in store for us a few albums down the track. By the sounds of this one, album four isn’t too far away.

I have just added the first widget to The Rock and Roll Report and it is a search engine to the Mercora music service. The Mercora Music Search box lets you search, find and listen to a collection of more than 3,000,000 songs by more than 200,000 artists. The Bandwidth Shindig continues over August 18-20 with various events taking

technology into their live show.²

On Saturday, August 19, The Bandwidth Shindig Expo will take place at the
Grand in San Francisco. It¹s free and open to the public and will feature
exhibits from companies on the cutting edge of music and technology. There

as CNET and CD Baby.

NORTH BY NORTHEAST JUST KEEPS GETTING BIGGER AND BETTER

Wednesday, June 21st, 2006

Nxne

TORONTO, JUNE 19–It’s never polite to brag, but we here at the North By Northeast Music & Film Festival and Conference can’t help but have a smile on our faces. It seems no matter how successful the previous year, the event just keeps getting bigger and better. This year’s edition, which ran from June 8 to 10, was the most successful to date. There was record attendance at the clubs, with more than 60,000 music lovers coming out to 33 venues to catch bands from countries as far away as England, Japan, Australia and Denmark; the Film Festival was a runaway success, with sold-out screenings; we had three wonderful celebrity interviews with Stewart Copeland-who was the hit of the festival-Pete Shelley, and Tom Verlaine; and new editions to the festival, the Town Hall and Indie Music Market, proved to be hugely popular. Of course, we shouldn’t get too carried away with ourselves-all this wouldn’t have been possible without your support. So we’d like to take a minute to say thanks to all of you for coming out and making this year a very memorable one!

The theme of the 12th annual NXNE was Do It Yourself. And with the music industry in the midst of earth-shattering upheavals and technology making it easier for the little guy to make his/her own music, what better theme could there have been?

The festival kicked-off Wednesday, June 7 with the annual free Nathan Phillips Square Lunch Time Concert. The weather was fantastic, the turnout was great, and Toronto mayor David Miller graced us with his presence, taking a few minutes out of his very busy schedule to welcome in the festival. He had some kind words to say about NXNE and acknowledge the important role the festival has to play in the development of emerging talent in this country. The noon-hour concert was hosted by MuchMusic’s Devon Soltendieck and featured rousing performances by Toronto’s Turn Off The Stars and Montreal’s Kobayashi. Later that night, over 1,000 people came out to the NXNE opening bash, co-hosted by NOW Magazine and Chart Magazine and held at the grand reopening of the beautiful Toronto landmark, Palais Royale.

On Thursday, the conference portion of the festival got going with the first-ever Town Hall, which brought together major and indie rock label heads, broadcasters, managers, artists, and funding organizations on one stage before an enthralled crowd of 250. Nettwerk Records head Terry McBride hosted.

The two-day conference took over the Holiday Inn on King on Friday and Saturday and delivered a solid line-up of interesting discussions and respected panelists who thrashed out everything from high tech innovations to grassroots marketing.

On Saturday, thousands of people converged on Dundas Square in the heart of the city to enjoy the free, all-ages Indie Music Market. The event, which ran from noon until 8 p.m., featured live performances by eight bands, and in true DIY fashion gave almost 100 artists from around the world the opportunity to sell their merchandise, share their music, meet new people and have fun. Also, members of Toronto’s own high-energy Zero Gravity Circus were on hand to provide additional entertainment throughout the day.

Line-ups and crowds of film fans took over the Royal Theatre and the NFB Cinema for the 6th year of the NXNE Film Festival, which, over the course of its four days, featured edgy films, shorts and videos from around the world that celebrated music in some way. And, of course, the highlight of the Film Festival was the screening of Stewart Copeland’s documentary, “Everyone Stares", about his former band the Police.

“NXNE is an exciting combination of indie rock and a film lovers gourmet feast. We had a great time and we would love to come back,” Copeland said.

But it was in the clubs where the majority of talent showed off their stuff to highly appreciative crowds that included delighted music fans, the Canadian music industry, leading American label execs and talent scouts as well as major media and promoters. The festival’s three nights were filled with spectacular musical memories. NXNE performers had a chance at incredible career-advancing opportunities–including national TV and radio appearances, deal offers, tour dates, and packed showcases–and the media and music industry got an opportunity to discover some of the best and brightest in the new crop of musicians. Letters From Elora took home the Rogers People’s Choice award and Sylvie was the recipient of the Galaxie Rising Stars award. Extra special thanks to all of the international artists who made their way to NXNE this year and found out that Canadian audiences are a notch above.

NXNE would like to thank the over 300 volunteers who dedicated their free time to ensuring the festival ran smoothly. Gratitude also goes out to our presenting sponsor, Rogers Wireless, and all of our new and returning sponsors. Last but not least, NXNE wouldn’t be a festival if it weren’t for all those who performed at and attended the event.

The 13th Annual North by Northeast Music & Film Festival and Conference will take place in Toronto June 7, 8, 9, 2007. In the clubs, in the theatres and on the streets, NXNE is the Best New Music for the people.

3 Kisses Amps Up The Positive, Party Vibe With Their Sophomore Release, It All Comes Down To Me

The second CD release by alt/pop/punk/rock power trio, 3 KISSES, features 13 new songs and two newly recorded bonus tracks from their first album, Wings. It All Comes Down To Me is a collection of high-energy party tunes sprinkled with the occasional soother to mix things up a bit.

3 KISSES released a demo version of ‘Girls’ Night’ in November 2005 to select programs and the song promptly made Rock Solid Pressure’s Top 15 of 2005. ‘Girls’ Night’ has also been featured on KLBJ 93.7 FM in Austin, TX and is a crowd favorite at live shows. You can preview the album, rate the songs and contact the band at www.MusicGorilla.com.

It All Comes Down To Me is already receiving rave reviews and fans are lining up to purchase their very own personalized autograph copy. Madalyn Sklar, founder of GoGirls Music.com declares it, "…a strong sophomore album with catchy tunes and a rockin’ beat. Tish Meeks and company have unleashed frenzy, so hop along and join the ride!" DJ, Eddie Russell with Country Eastern/Outlaw For Peace Radio says, "One of the best compliments that I can give is that I’ve 1000’s of CDs stacked high but It All Comes Down To Me stands alone in style. I also liked the in-your-face, heart-on-the-sleeve boldness and brass balls of the material and the way it’s honestly and ‘having-a-great-time’ delivered."

June 9, 2006, marks the launch of the It All Comes Down To Me Tour 2K6 with dates in Houston, TX; San Antonio, TX; Austin, TX; College Station, TX; Lubbock, TX; Chicago, IL; Indianapolis, IN; Cincinnati, OH; Philadelphia, PA; Harrisburg, PA; New York City, NY; and more (see www.3kisses.com for details). Easterners will have the opportunity to catch 3 KISSES at the Millennium Music Conference in Harrisburg, PA, on Saturday, June 24, where they will be performing the Rolling Rock/GoGirls Music Showcase. This band never rests; they will return to Texas to begin recording their third album in July and will be doing more regional touring in August.

The fall will find them gearing up for multiple performances at Susan G. Komen Races across the state of Texas. Tish Meeks lost her mother to breast cancer and Tony’s mother and step-mother are both breast cancer survivors, so the band is very passionate about working with this organization. 3 KISSES donate a portion of their CD sales to support the Susan G. Komen Foundation and all 3 KISSES performances at Susan G. Komen Events are done as a service to the foundation. 3 KISSES has performed for over 150,000 people and at seven Susan G. Komen events since their inception in January 2004. When you buy 3 KISSES music, you’re not only getting some great tunes, but you are contributing to a very important cause.

Blow Up Hollywood To Release The Diaries Of Private Henry Hill

Blow Up Hollywood are set to release their third studio album, The Diaries of Private Henry Hill aptly on July 4, 2006. Based on the journals of Henry Hill, a soldier who died tragically in the Iraq War, this concept album narrates a first-hand account of the transformation of a real man from citizen to soldier to killer to martyr.

The Diaries of Private Henry Hill is Blow Up Hollywood’s follow-up to the critically heralded 2004 album Fake, for which Amplifier Magazine touted, "For fans of Radiohead, solo-Dave Gahan/Martin Gore, and Messrs Waters, Gilmore, Wright and Mason, Fake is the real deal."

Founded in 2001, Blow Up Hollywood have built a tremendous following, especially impressive given their anonymous tendencies and strict independence. Selling their albums exclusively online, Blow Up Hollywood has sold over 25,000 units to date.

This critically acclaimed outfit compelled CMJ Magazine to state, "In name and art, this New York collective is a response to a culture that values style over substance."  Furthermore, according to The Village Voice, "[Blow Up Hollywood] mine a swooshy sort of ornateness that might be rooted in Pink Floyd, Radiohead, or Porcupine Tree:  leaden emotion amid promising open spaces."

Blow Up Hollywood is the collaboration of seven New York musical greats. They chose their moniker as a backlash to the excess of glitter marketing in media. Together, the band creates a huge orchestral wall of sound with blissful string arrangements and poignant vocals making each track a requiem. As the All Music Guide described, "Like gray clouds hanging low on a fall Sunday afternoon, occasionally pierced by hopeful moments of sunshine that never seem to last, this music is downright overshadowing and all-consuming yet, in a subtle, gentle manner, somehow comforting."

The band’s live show is a mixed media event incorporating self-produced films projected on giant screens while the band scores the movie live, almost secretly in the dark. A musical, cinematic and theatrical experience not to be missed, Blow Up Hollywood are set for three special performances with more to follow.

Forgive Me Father Featured on WIVK-FM’s Americana Highway on Father’s Day 2006

The single Forgive Me Father from songwriter Lee Lindsey’s second record, Above the Madding Crowd, will be featured on WIVK-FM’s Americana Highway program on June 18, 2006.

Americana Highway, hosted by Jack Ryan, appears every Sunday from 11PM to Midnight on WIVK-FM in Knoxville, Tennessee.

"Forgive Me Father is about love and redemption. It’s a plea of forgiveness from a married woman tempted by another. It’s about asking for forgiveness for not being strong enough and yet questions, why does love need to be forgiven?" says Lee.

Above the Madding Crowd is Lee’s second release off of her indie rock label, Tall Poppy Records. It is an eclectic folk and roots rock expression produced by session wizard and musical director, Jingles (Gabrielle, BB Mak).

It is indeed Lee’s story that’s being told in many ways on this record. Her life begins on the Ottawa River in Canada. She’s traveled, modeled and performed around the world since leaving home at fifteen with a guitar on her back. Above The Madding Crowd explores a diverse, emotional terrain that searches for and discovers Lee’s self-worth, her talents and her voice as a woman and an artist.

Vernon Neilly Jumps Into Billboard Top 10 Retail Chart

Against what would seem insurmountable odds in today’s music business, where not only terrestrial radio, satellite, cable, internet radio, brick and mortar retail, online stores, and digital download retail are dominated by major and major independent record companies with heavy promotional resources, the small Los Angeles area label Boosweet Records has defied the all the odds with it’s current CD release "G-Fire II" by Vernon Neilly.
The new single by Neilly "Unconditional Love" (Vernon Neilly & G-Fire - G-Fire II - Unconditional Love) which is playing nation and world wide in a number of formats, has been the most added at AC (adult contemporary) commercial radio, CMJ radio, and is currently heating up at UAC (urban adult contemporary) with R&R indicator and monitored stations being added weekly.

This week the upward swing of radio activity has catapulted Vernon Neilly’s "G-Fire II", and Boosweet Records into the Top 10 Billboard Contemporary Jazz Albums Chart, leaving in it’s smoke many major labels and artists. When commenting on the success of his project Neilly said, "it has been, and continues to be a lot of hard work competing with major and major independent labels who have incredible monetary resources to promote and market their products. Boosweet Records has assembled a team of experienced industry veterans though, that are experts in their respective positions, and as you can see they are getting the job done".

Vernon will be soon headlining a series of concert dates in the Southern California area beginning with the Juneteenth Festival Celebration sponsored by the Santa Ana Chapter of the NAACP on June 10th, 2006 in the city’s Carl Thorton Park. June 17th, 2006 he will co-headline the Black Music Month Festival sponsored by the City Of Los Angeles and Ms. Barbara Morrison, with the legendary jazz guitarist Phil Upchurch at one of city’s most well known parks, Leimert Park in the Crenshaw District of Los Angeles. June 25th, 2006 Vernon will join blues diva Ms. Barbara Morrison and her sizzling band "The Bu Crew", to open for the legendary blues singer "Bobby Blue Bland" once again at Leimert Park in Los Angeles. Tickets for these events can be purchased through Ticket Master.

DCIA Announces P2P Media Summit Speakers

The Distributed Computing Industry Association, a trade organization with seventy-five (75) Members representing peer-to-peer (P2P) software providers, content rights holders, and service-and-support companies, announced the speakers and agenda for its upcoming P2P MEDIA SUMMIT. This first annual DCIA Conference & Exposition is scheduled for June 22nd-23rd in McLean, VA.

"For both observers and participants in our emerging high-growth industry, the P2P MEDIA SUMMIT is a must-attend event that promises to be of enormous value to delegates," said DCIA CEO Marty Lafferty in making the announcement.

The June 22nd Conference will feature keynotes from top P2P software distributors, panels of industry leaders, and valuable workshops. There will be a continental breakfast, luncheon, and networking cocktail reception with live entertainment.

The June 23rd Exposition is being held in conjunction with the Digital Media Conference, and registration for the full DCIA Conference & Exposition includes that event as well.

Keynote speakers for the June 22nd DCIA Conference will be eDonkey’s Sam Yagan, GNAB’s Jan Marc Külper, and MyPeer’s Les Ottolenghi.

As a result of market-share shifts among the current generation of open peer-to-peer (P2P) software programs, which have demonstrated steady usage growth for more than three years, MetaMachine’s eDonkey now ranks number one on a global basis, ahead of second-ranked BitTorrent.

With the recent launch of its white-label P2P platform branded as In2Movies with partner Warner Bros., GNAB, a service of the Bertelsmann Group’s arvato mobile, exemplifies the industry’s closest collaboration of the entertainment and technology sectors.

And as a result of INTENT MediaWorks unprecedented development and integration work to leverage multiple file-sharing platforms and UI configurations, as well as web-based distribution, MyPeer represents the most advanced implementation of P2P in the marketplace today.

Exhibits and demonstrations for the June 23rd DCIA Exposition, held in conjunction with the Digital Media Conference, feature industry-leading products and services.

International Superstar Eddy Grant Released First New Studio Album In Five Years: "Reparation" (Ice Records) For Worldwide Distribution

The first new studio album in five years has been released for worldwide distribution by International Superstar Eddy Grant through his Ice Records label. The album, "Reparation" (Ice Records-9500), was initially released last year as a website exclusive on www.eddygrant.com and www.icerecords.com. As of April 18, 2006, "Reparation" can be found in brick-and-mortar (and internet) record stores throughout the world.

"Reparation" was written, arranged and performed by EDDY GRANT. The album was recorded and mixed to completion at his Blue Wave Record Studios in St. Philip, Barbados, West Indies. "Reparation" contains thirteen brilliant tunes ranging In styles from Ringbang to Pop to Rock to Gospel. All instruments are played by EDDY except for the gospel piano of Andre Daniel on ‘Jesus Got A Face.’ EDDY also sings lead and backing vocals on all tracks except ‘(Gotta Be) Positive,’ ‘Ringbang Man,’ ‘Long Night,’ and ‘Love Weself’ where he is accompanied on backing vocals by Indra Rudder; the backing vocals on ‘Jesus Got A Face’ are supplied by The Cavite Choral Choir.

EDDY GRANT has released over two dozen albums. He has had numerous hit singles including ‘Living On The Front Line,’ ‘Do You Feel My Love,’ ‘I Don’t Wanna Dance,’ ‘Romancing The Stone,’ ‘Gimme Hope Jo’anna,’ and the blockbuster, ‘Electric Avenue.’ To-date he has scanned over 10 million units (source: Nielsen Soundscan).

There have been, or indeed are, very few artists that have managed to achieve as much as EDDY GRANT has done musically or in business and still be the controller of his own destiny. In 1974 he set up his own record label Ice Records. In 1977 his Ice Records label was established worldwide. Now totally in control of his own production, manufacture (he’d bought the British Homophone Record Manufacturing Plant) and distribution, EDDY became one of the few artists with the creative freedom to experiment with his music which includes Reggae, Soul, Calypso, Pop, Rock, Soca and Ringbang. The Barbados-based Ice Records is the true home of artists of these genres and owns the largest catalog of Caribbean music in the world. The label features artists such as music legends Eddy Grant, Calypso Rose, Lord Kitchener, Mighty Sparrow, Mighty Terror, Roaring Lion, among many others.

First-ever Gathering Of ADA’s Leading Independent Labels Will Feature Performances From Ted Leo + Pharmacists, Matt Pond PA, Yo La Tengo

Wednesday, June 14th, 2006

(PRESS RELEASE) Alternative Distribution Alliance (ADA) To Host ‘Declaration of Independence’ Conference in Philadelphia; JUNE 14-16

First-ever gathering of ADA’s leading independent labels will feature performances from Ted Leo + Pharmacists, matt pond PA, Yo La Tengo
and others at the Trocadero

NEW YORK, June 6, 2006-In a first-of-its-kind event, Alternative Distribution Alliance (ADA), the No. 1 distributor of independent music in the U.S., will host a gathering of its family of labels in America’s cradle of independence, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, from June 14-16.

A meeting of more than 60 of the industry’s leading independent labels, the "Declaration of Independence" conference is a forum designed to empower ADA’s distributed labels with helpful background about the topics most relevant to them, such as online, mobile and satellite distribution, research and information gathering and street marketing.

The conference will also celebrate the continued success and longevity of ADA, which Newsweek recently dubbed, "…the darling of U.S. indie rock labels…" ADA is part of Warner Music Group.

The conference will culminate with a presentation from Wired magazine’s, editor in chief, Chris Anderson, author of the influential article, "The Long Tail." Anderson believes that the culture and economy is shifting from a focus on a relatively small number of "hits" at the head of the demand curve and toward a huge number of niches in the tail of the demand curve.

ADA will also host "Indies Only," two nights of performances by some of the country’s leading independent artists, including Ted Leo + Pharmacists, matt pond PA, The Mooney Suzuki, Todd Barry, The Stills and the indie rock legends, Yo La Tengo.

"Indies Only" shows will be held at the Trocadero Theatre and all music performances will be open to the public. For ticket information and a list of artist performances, please visit www.thetroc.com.
