Did the iPod kill Top of the Pops?

The BBC is blaming the cancellation of Top of the Pops on the proliferation of downloading as reported in Pocket Lint. It sites a release from the BBC stating:

"Over recent years the show has faced ever increasing competition from multi-media and niche musical outlets which enable viewers to consume music of their choice any time night or day in a way that Top of the Pops simply cannot deliver in its current weekly format."

It’s really not hard to believe that a show like this would be killed by things such as podcasts, videoblogs and the like. It’s a whole new world out there and it will take a hell of a lot for old media to figure out how to deal with all the competition. It’s about time I say.

Later.
