The Db’s Offer MP3 Track To Benefit New Orleans Musicians Relief Fundings
On the heels of their first live shows in more than 20 years, The dB’s are offering their newly recorded, previously unreleased version of the Motown classic "What Becomes of the Broken Hearted" to help raise money for the displaced musicians of New Orleans affected by Hurricane Katrina. The track is accessible at http://www.ThedBs.com/katrina
Not one but two members of The dB’s have been made homeless by Katrina. Peter Holsapple and his family are fine, but their home is almost certainly beyond salvaging. Former member Jeff Beninato is also fine but had to evacuate; his second-floor apartment may or may not have escaped damage, he doesn’t know yet — and may not for a long time.
They don’t need immediate financial help, but many New Orleans musicians do. Jeff Beninato met with some great people at Chase Bank in Chicago and, in conjunction with New Orleans Director of Music Development Scott Aiges, has set up the New Orleans Musicians Relief Fund. Donations to the fund will go directly toward getting struggling musical artists back on their feet. It will provide money for food and shelter to those without, and hopefully replace musical equipment that was lost.
Munch Music, Inc. - www.MyMunchMusic.com and www.RockandRollDream.com a new digital recording studio launches its first recording artist debut song, "And Air" by Van Paul and the Forever Red. The haunting lyrics, prophetically written prior to the recent hurricane in the US, remind us of the basic needs of humanity as civilization as we know it gets tested.
The powerful yet simple and heartfelt words, "I need, need water to drink / And air, and air, and air" are sung passionately by a new songwriter with a vision to make a difference. Taylor Van Zant, a 16 year old, determined to be the next famous "Van Zant" musician launches his band’s debut, as an up and coming artist and as co-founder of Munch Music, Inc.
The musical download, now available, will be a driving force for the new band to speak for their generation as well as to campaign for donations (requested before each download) to the Red Cross to benefit the survivors of the recent hurricane on the Gulf Coast. Songwriter and vocalist Taylor Van Zant stated, "It’s important for us to raise awareness of the needs of the Red Cross and to do whatever we can to try and make a difference in this crisis."
At the download location, listeners will be asked to make a donation to the Red Cross Association of whatever they feel is appropriate. Please note that the song "And Air" will start playing as soon as the link is clicked on. The download is available at the following link: http://www.mymunchmusic.com/downloads_VPFReds.htm
In an unprecedented show of unity and support for the victims of Hurricane Katrina, nearly every single dollar raised at Monday night’s Dave Matthews Band benefit concert at Denver’s Red Rocks Amphitheatre will go to aid those affected by the hurricane.
"We are thrilled to announce that over $ 1.5 million dollars will be donated to the Bama Works Hurricane Katrina Relief Fund," said Chuck Morris, President of Chuck Morris Presents. "The fund will be used to provide short term disaster relief to the affected Gulf Coast population, and long term assistance for rebuilding of communities."
"We are deeply grateful to The Neville Brothers, John Butler Trio and to everyone who supported this effort," said Dave Matthews Band. "We want to especially thank our fans for responding so generously to assist those affected by the hurricane."
Everyone involved in the concert including the band and their crew, the promoter, the City and County of Denver, all of the vendors, truck drivers, stage hands, security personnel, ushers, parking attendants, maintenance services, local police and fire, and many others donated their time to Monday night’s concert, cutting the overall expenses of the show to a bare minimum. As a result, the benefit raised over $ 1.5 million dollars for hurricane relief.
As this year’s VOODOO MUSIC EXPERIENCE hones in on a new city (TBA), Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails–one of the headliners for the October 29-30 event–has reinforced his commitment to the event, a New Orleans tradition for the past six years.
The ambition of this year’s event has changed, as the Voodoo Music Experience and the Entertainment Industry Foundation have partnered to raise critically needed funds for those affected by Hurricane Katrina.
Reznor, a former New Orleans resident who had maintained a recording studio in the city, stated today: "It means a lot to me that the Voodoo Music Experience is continuing on and I look forward to being a part of this amazing New Orleans tradition. It’s great that other cities have opened their doors to this year’s event, and the New Orleans spirit will definitely remain in the air–that’s something the floods cannot wash away. We are going to be part of the rebuilding process and we are asking the entire music community to join us."
Stephen Rehage, founder and independent producer of the annual VOODOO MUSIC EXPERIENCE says, "I’m thankful to Trent for remaining committed to us as we transition this year’s event. As a former New Orleans resident, he understands the importance of rebuilding the local music community. Our goals are the same in that we both seek to bring our hometown of New Orleans back to life."
Guitarist, trumpeter and bandleader Jeff Healey will host a "traditional jazz" benefit performance at his club in Toronto on Sunday afternoon October 2. With his Jazz Wizards in tow, Healey will welcome The Happy Pals - long the resident Saturday afternoon band at Grossman’s Tavern - as well as an intermission skiffle session from Mr. Rick & The Biscuits.
Other guests taking part will include New Orleans trumpet player Kevin Clarke (who is running a benefit the previous week at The Distillery), Donnie "Mr. Downchild" Walsh (who frequently sits in with both The Wizards and The Pals), and singers Terra Hazleton and Laura Hubert.
All proceeds will go to the New Orleans Musicians’ Clinic. Said Healey: "Obviously, we are all touched by the plight of the city that has given us so much music. We want to do what we can to help New Orleans musicians bring their music back to their audiences at home and around the world."

Hurricane Katrina Fundraising Challenge From SESAC
All of our hearts go out to the victims of Hurricane Katrina as they try to rebuild their lives. True to form, America’s music community has stepped up and done its part to ease the suffering of those affected by this catastrophe. Although most of us have already given (and given), the needs continue to increase, and SESAC, working with the American Red Cross, has come up with a convenient way to make your ongoing contributions accomplish twice as much.
We are calling on our affiliates, vendors, music business colleagues, neighbors, friends and staff to contribute to the Red Cross. SESAC will match your donations, dollar for dollar, for the next $50,000 our affiliates, vendors, employees and friends contribute.
Here’s how it works:
Make your check payable to the American Red Cross (checks only please).
Write "National Disaster Relief" on the memo line of your check.
Send it to the American Red Cross c/o SESAC, 55 Music Square East, Nashville, TN 37203.
We will forward your check to the Red Cross with a matching contribution from SESAC to double your donation.

Well I guest hosted on the Drastic Plastic Radio Show on September 26th, 2005 from 10:00 PM - 11:00 PM on CKUT FM and while I still fumbled and mumbled my way through I got the chance to play some great indie rock and roll. So here it is, my playlist for the night. You can listen to the archives at CKUT 90.3 FM Montreal.
Until next time.
Later.
According to the news section of KSAN tribute site Jive 95, Moonlight Groove Highway has been put on "hiatus" which from what I can tell means it has been canceled. It is too bad that the experiment didn’t work out as it seemed to me to be a great idea that could have succeeded. Perhaps the lack of stations picking up the service doomed it from the start but maybe a pure internet-only stream would be a better bet for something like this instead. I will try to find out what happened and let you know.
Later.
If you are in Montreal anytime between September 28th until October 2, 2005 then check out the line-up for this year’s edition of Pop Montreal and go see a show or two (or three or four)! A guaranteed great time in an amazing city. Check it out.
Later.
The Rock and Roll Report will be back on the radio as I fill in again for Doug Ford on the Drastic Plastic Radio Show on September 26th from 10:00 - 11:00 PM once again on the mighty CKUT FM. Will I remember how to use the CD player? Will I fumble my words and talk incoherently on the mic? Will I remember how to get in the building? All these questions will be answered this Monday night on CKUT 90.3 FM Montreal. Be there or be square.
Later.

Latino Hip-Hop’s Chicano Radio Network Aids In Katrina Relief
The Chicano Radio Network is extending a unique invitation to the hip hop community and to the entire community as a whole. A unique unselfish opportunity to help aid the survivors of Katrina and to gain free advertising for your artist or business.
The Chicano Radio Network, the original radio stations bringing you the best in Latin music since 1995, are most widely known as a source for today¹s hip-hop, rap, and R&B from underground and unsigned artists.
"We at CRN were deeply touched by the losses endured by the good people of New Orleans and surrounding communities. Till the end of November we will be donating all of the proceeds for advertising to the relief efforts," said Frank Miranda CRN Live owner.
Harry Connick Jr. And Musicnotes.com Raise Money For Habitat For Humanity, New Orleans Division
Musicnotes, together with songwriter/artist Harry Connick Jr., today announced that all proceeds from the sale of downloadable sheet music for the song "City Beneath the Sea" will be donated to the New Orleans Division of Habitat for Humanity.
"City Beneath the Sea," written in 1996 as a tribute to his beloved city of birth, was specifically selected to be used in the Hurricane Katrina relief effort by Harry Connick Jr. 100% of proceeds from the sale of this $4.95 sheet music download, available exclusively at Musicnotes.com, will go towards the Habitat for Humanity relief program.
"We strongly encourage every musician to download and play Harry Connick Jr.’s love song to New Orleans," said Musicnotes CEO, Kathleen Marsh. "Not only will the proceeds go to a great organization, but the music will help soothe the soul while New Orleans is being rebuilt."
It was also announced last weekend that Connick has agreed to be honorary chair of Habitat for Humanity’s "Operation Home Delivery," a long-term rebuilding plan for the hurricane-damaged Gulf Coast. Connick has been an active promoter of the charity for years.

Toucan Cove Entertainment is offering the download of Rig the Jig’s "City of New Orleans" exclusively through Real Networks (Real / Rhapsody / Rolling Stone.com) for only 79 cents, with a portion of the proceeds going to the American Red Cross disaster relief fund for New Orleans.
A folk classic written by Steve Goodman and covered by countless musicians in all genres, "City of New Orleans" is a slice of Americana filled with nostalgia and hope. Ireland’s Rig the Jig adds a celtic touch to the song which appears on their Toucan Cove release, Passing Through. A fan favorite, this version of "City of New Orleans" provides unique tone and personality with its traditional instrumentation and impeccable vocals. But more importantly, the song lyrically paints a picture of the history and majestic import of the city.
The "City of New Orleans" download special can be found on the Rhapsody and Real Music Store home pages now.

B-C, understands what the people are going through from the first hit of Katrina in Florida to the devastation along the coast of Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama. but he never seen anything like what we’re now witnessing."
He went on to say that, while communicating with friends about ways to help the survivors of Katrina, At the same time, he happened to receive an E-mail from Derek Sivers, the founder of CDBaby.com (online music store) offering an easy method for musicians to donate the proceeds from selling their CDs on CDBaby.com to the American Red Cross. ICM Records Artist DJ Coles To Donate New CD Proceeds To Katrina Disaster Relief
DJ Coles is nothing more than a servant Christian Recording Artist who has been touched deeply by the devastation from Hurricane Katrina. With an expected regional release of his new project, "Your Grace" scheduled for late September and a national release scheduled for the spring of 2006, Coles is poised to aid in the Hurricane relief efforts by donating proceeds immediately after his CD is released.
The title track of DJ Coles’ upcoming project, "Your Grace" is a song that speaks to the listener’s spirit. The lyrics offer hope, healing and promise during this time of chaos for all those affected by Hurricane Katrina, especially for those who cannot find missing families and friends.
"It is a hard, uncertain time for many people right now. I want people to know there is a hope for their broken spirits," says Coles.
Being that Coles is also a youth pastor, his heart aches for the children and families who are without homes, electricity, and other daily necessities. His goal is to gain support for funds to help as many people as possible who are in desperate need.

Hurricane Katrina has left a trail of devastation throughout Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama. Much of the Gulf Coast is obliterated and floodwaters continue to rise in the overwhelmed city of New Orleans. Millions of people are suffering and desperately need water, food, shelter and medical care today, as well as help coping with what promises to be a major long-term recovery effort.

"Effective immediately, Broken Bow Records will donate $1 per unit sold on all BBR CD products with the hope of raising one million dollars by the end of the year. Radio Groups Come Together To Form United Radio Broadcasters Of New Orleans
In response to the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, the radio groups serving New Orleans and the surrounding area have come together to form the United Radio Broadcasters of New Orleans. The United Radio Broadcasters of New Orleans is a joint effort to provide the region with the most complete, reliable and consistent radio broadcast of emergency recovery and relief information. It is comprised of stations operated by Clear Channel Radio, Entercom Communications and independent stations 1470 KLCL in Lake Charles and 1290 KJEF in Jennings. The collaboration features Entercom’s WWL-AM 870, enhanced by the resources of the other Entercom and Clear Channel stations in the region. The Louisiana Network out of Baton Rouge is also providing important facilities support.
An estimated 15 stations are combining programming and engineering resources that began airing the same broadcast at 10:00 p.m. Central Time last night. Programming consists of continuous news, information and coverage of local relief efforts, and will include live feeds from street reporters and interviews and updates from local officials and relief coordinators. A toll-free 800 number will allow listeners to call in with their experiences, eyewitness reports and questions. In addition, the stations will share a helicopter to transport engineers to transmitter sites and assist in the evacuation of employees as needed.
Juvenile Spearheading New Orleans Relief Efforts
Atlantic recording artist Juvenile, whose New Orleans home was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina, is helping spearhead the movement by the music community to organize relief efforts for his native city.
"Our city of New Orleans and several other surrounding cities are experiencing total devastation," said Juvenile. "People have lost their loved ones, their homes, their belongings, and their jobs. Many of our folks in New Orleans didn’t have much to begin with and now they have now lost everything. Everyone has to pull together to help all those who have suffered these great losses.
"We as Americans were so responsive to the world in the face of the tsunami, and we have sent our troops and our money to Iraq and Afghanistan," Juvenile continued. "So I am sure that we, as individuals and as a country, can apply to Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida the massive level of effort and giving which is surely demanded now. Please keep our city, its people, and our families in your prayers and donate whatever you can to the Red Cross."
Teruis Gray, aka Juvenile, was not in New Orleans when Hurricane Katrina hit. His home was located near the water on Lake Pontchartrain, in St. Tammany Parish in the city of Slidell. New Orleans’ neighbor to the east, Slidell was crossed by the eye of the hurricane, and Juvenile lost his house and all of his possessions. The multi-platinum rapper grew up in the Magnolia Projects in the center of New Orleans, and he has always been a New Orleans resident. His parents also live in New Orleans, and he has over 200 relatives in the area. The locations of many of his family members are still unknown, and only about half of them were able to get out before the hurricane arrived. Many of his friends also have still to locate family members.

The latest release from Rosetta West titled "Illumination" is the type of record that draws you in slowly but surely into it’s fine, churning rock ‘n’ roll sludge. Stripped down, low fi blues rock with some interesting twists and turns, Illumination is another fine release from the boys behind last year’s great X Descendant. If you ever wanted to hear "Chain of Fools" from a singer that to me eerily sounds like Phil Lynott resurrected then check out Illumination. Great molten rock and roll for 2005. If you’re interested (and how can you not be) contact the band at rosettawest@aol.com for info on how you can obtain your copy.

I have always been a big fan of psycedelic rock and roll so I was blown away when I recently had a chance to listen to the new psych compilation from Hard Soul Records called Sugarlumps. This is a fantastic compilation that combines some bona fide rarities like "Candlelight" by Grantchester Meadow and "Path Through the Forest" by The Factory with cool recent stuff like "Sapce Travel" by Soul Hooligan and "These Eyes" by Jarvis Humby. A fantastic CD to blare from the rooftops and sufficiently weird enough to confuse most clueless American Idol fans, Sugarlumps with it’s combining the old with the new is a great idea executed to perfection by a great indie rock label. I can’t wait for volume two!

Evening people!
I’m very excited to announce the return of British website Designer Punk!
In the two years since the site was first launched, Designer Punk, recieved over 170,000 hits from over 100,000 visitors, however the site was temporarily dismantled towards the end of last year.
However it’s now back and is desperatly in need of talented writers and photographers. So if you have any album, single, concert reviews and/or interviews whizz ‘em off the site’s editor, Paul Whitlam now!
I have to big up this website as it was the first place where I had any of my writing published and I really want the site to be as big as it possibly can.
Cheers,
Ashley King

As I was updating mucking about the CD Baby site looking for some cool new stuff to post to The Rock and Roll Report, I realized that some people may think that CD Baby is merely an online record store and nothing more but they would be quite mistaken. The cool thing about CD Baby is it presents to you a myriad of ways to discover new music and to listen to it before you buy. You can use their extensive search function and search for music by the usual "artist Name" and "Album Title" but they also have a great "Sounds Like" feature that works just like you think it would. They also have a great browse function that allows you to browse for music "New Arrivals," "Top Sellers" and the very cool flavor feature that you just have to try for yourself! If you click on the artists featured weekly on this site CD Baby allows you to hear full versions of the songs in two types of quality plus has links to the band’s website plus links to other artists in that same style to help you discover even more new stuff. It really is an amazing site and if you haven’t been there or haven’t been there in awhile you should check it out since it really is a great treasure trove of some cool rock and roll.
Later.
I came across another cool online music store that brings you some great indie rock using the power of open source software. Independent Music Online is a music store that focuses on lesser-known independent artists and looks to have quite an interesting variety. Check it out and support indie rock artists while seeing for yourself the power of open source software. All very cool stuff.

On a scorching weekend in late August, some of the worlds most established bands and the latest finds gathered together to wow the 70,000+ audience at the 10th annual V Festival. I was at the Weston Park, Stafford venue to witness the bands, booze and the casual chaos that surrounds the festival vibe. With 4 main stages, an endless supply of alcohol, countless kooky shops and some unusual food, not to mention the hygiene heaven that is the Portaloo, the V Festival has all the ingredients for an amazing weekend. The sun shone on the festival this year and it’s fair to say the atmosphere was sizzling as people of all ages and from all over Britain joined together for a weekend to remember (although temporary memory loss may occur after consuming copious amounts of alcohol).
This years V stage saw the likes of Embrace, Franz Ferdinand, Scissor Sisters, Athlete, GLC, Maroon 5, The Streets, The Zutons and the legendary Oasis. The festival turned out in force for Oasis, singing in unison (if slightly off-key) to some of Oasis’ timeless classics. Now don’t get me wrong, I like Oasis, songs such as Wonderwall are now a part of Brit Pop history, but I couldn’t help feeling their performance was a bit bland, lacking the cocky energy that defines Oasis. Perhaps they’re going soft with old age, but surely they could have done better than that.
One band that seem to have boundless energy are from my home town of Newport. After
unexpectedly playing on the NME stage last year, GLC returned this year to rock (and shock) the main stage with cheekily entitled songs such as ‘Your mother’s got a penis’ and ‘Guns don’t kill people, rappers do’, (which stayed at No1 in Belgium for near on 9 months). The GLC clan stormed the stage and engraved such sayings as ‘You knows it’ into the audiences brain, safe as f**k! Classic!
C4 stage this year presented many up and coming bands, as well as one or two bands already firmly established in the alternative music world. With Saturday seeing The Ordinary Boys, The Music, The Hives and the amazing Prodigy, it is fair to say there was plenty to offer to all tastes. Sunday saw some bands that seem to have shot to success, the edgy indie rock vibe that seems to influence many of today’s music was seen predominantly in bands such as The Bravery and The Kaiser Chiefs. Both bands playing an enjoyable but not amazing set, yet it fitted the ambience of excited calm amongst everyone and helped to build the audience for the later performances.
Festivals exist for the night; the day is simply a warm up. It’s hard to put into words the amazing thrill you get from standing amongst 70, 000 people, outside on a warm summers night, listening to some truly amazing music, it sends shivers down your spine. The ultimate performance for me had to be the Prodigy; Keith Flint made the stage come alive. I have never felt such energy and excitement from any other band. The atmosphere was indescribable, everyone went mad, dancing non-stop as the base line coursed through everyone’s blood, sending everyone into a kind of frenzy. Whilst I bopped wildly I actually got goose bumps, feeling quite emotional as I was blown away by the talent before me. This talent can only come from experience, which is what many bands lack, but the Prodigy just seem to get better and better. Unbelievable!
There are probably a few pieces of advice I could offer you in order to make the most of your time at a festival:
Most importantly make sure you take some up for it mates, a fair bit of cash, a camera to capture the fun and be prepared to get pretty wasted, see the charming site of 6 men lined up 4 a pee, explore some uh, unusual shops, taste a Welsh Oggy (must be tried by all and so far unfound back in Wales!), meet some amazing people, listen to some awesome bands and generally have one of the best weekends of your life.
Festivals are there to make you happy – Use them!

"Holy Crapola! What did they put in the soup?" |
So I’m shopping for a new weasel on Ebay and my eyes fall upon this little beauty.
Clean lines, mint exterior, a real gem of an ermine. Starting bid - a ridiculous $15.00!! Is it just me or do we all wish we could get back to simpler pre-9/11 times where everyone could afford a decent weasel. Curse you terrorists! You have won…
This week’s selections of rock and roll from the CD Baby store are more than just great rock and roll records. The musicians featured this week are donating their entire wholesale price of their CD to the American Red Cross disaster relief fund. Great music by musicians that are trying to help out. My hats off to them and CD Baby for making this happen.

Here is the playlist for my gig filling in on the Drastic Plastic Radio Show on CKUT FM on September 5, 2005. You can always listen to an archive broadcast of the show on the CKUT site if you want to hear some great music interupted by the odd fumbling time check and announcements.
To me, if I could start a radio statio, this would be the basis to what I would do. The emphasis would be on new, indie rock and roll from around the world with a smattering of lost rock and roll classics and not so classics. You can still throw in the big boys from today and yesterday but instead of playing, let’s say "You Can’t Always Get What You Want" by the Stones you would play "Connection" or "Jiving Sister Fanny." Leave the time-worn classics to classic rock stations and concentrate on the less played stuff by these legends. Throw in some radical/progressive news and public affairs programming and whammo, cool radio for the podcasting generation. Ah, it is to dream!
Let me know what you thought of the show. A big thank you to Doug Ford, the regular host of Drastic Plastic for letting me play in his sonic playground. Thanks Doug!

If you are a podcaster struggling to podcast music but the legalities of the whole deal are preventing you from doing so then you might want to check out these two sources of podcast-safe music. Magnatune, the record label that claims "we are not evil" (and they’re not) have podcast-safe indie rock available that you can play. Just check out their Podcasting FAQ for all the details. In addition, Garageband has some great music and software to help you out in your podcasting adventures. Just head over to their Radio section and check out what’s available. If you are interested in podcasting new indie rock I think that you will find indie rock bands and record labels to be more open than the majors at allowing the podcasting of their music. Check it out and get thee to a microphone!
