Check out the article for a full discussion and reviews. The hunt begins!

The 2005 Midtown Music Festival

Steven’s Untitled Rock Show

Wednesday, March 30th, 2005

Stevens_300dpilogo_flat Rock and roll TV is a tough thing to do right but at least Fuse TV is trying and this show to me looks quite interesting. "Steven’s Untitled Rock Show" is hosted by VJ Steven and is a show where he "gets the chance to expose new and potentially influential artists that are bubbling under and over in the worlds of indie rock, punk and emo." Catch "Steven’s Untitled Rock Show" weekdays at 4pm ET and 9pm ET on Fuse. Sounds like it could be fun. Check it out and see if you can spot the next "Simple Plan" (which is my son’s new favourite band by the way). Beats "American Idol!"

The Electronic Entertainment Policy Initiative

Wednesday, March 30th, 2005

With the increasingly bitter battles being fought behind the "content" companies and electronics company over the future of entertainment in the digital world, the Electronic Entertainment Policy Initiative has been formed to foster cooperation in the areas of electronic entertainment and its many related issues, problems and impacts. From their website:

EEPI — Electronic Entertainment Policy Initiative — is a project launched in March 2005 to encourage, foster, and facilitate cooperation between the various interest groups concerned about "electronic entertainment technologies" and their impacts, including current and future technical, legal, policy, and other issues. These groups include a vast range of entertainment industry content providers; electronic equipment manufacturers; consumers and consumer interest groups; entertainment industry artists and their representatives; and a range of other interested parties.

Sounds like it has potential to bring sanity to the current debate, although all eyes are currently fixed on the MGM vs. Grokster court case currently before the United States Supreme Court. With musicians increasingly open to other forms of digital distribution, the landscape is changing faster than even the law can comprehend. We live in interesting times.

Danko Jones and Bad Taste Records

Tuesday, March 29th, 2005

Danko_jones_1 I am a big fan of Canadian band Danko Jones but as is unfortunately often the case, the band seems better appreciated in Europe then here in Canada. Nevertheless they will be hitting the U.S. for a a bunch of dates starting in April so be sure to check them out if they are in your neck of the woods and be careful ’cause they like to play LOUD. For those in Europe, you can pick up the latest Danko Jones release from the very cool Swedish record label Bad Taste Records, a label that features a bunch of cool bands in addition to Danko Jones such as the Hard-Ons, All Systems Go! and the Satanic Surfers (cool name). Check out Bad Taste’s excellent audio and video pages for some great downloads. Man those Swedes know how to rock!

Ms. Cherry Brings The Noise And The Krunk

Cherries are one of those rare fruits that can be both sweet and tart. The same can be said for Ms. Cherry, the first lady of StreetWize Recordz. This petite cutie is sweet to look at, but don’t get it twisted, Ms. Cherry can bring it like a pro. With her crunk energy, street rhymes, and determination to make it to the top, Ms. Cherry is about to change the female rap game.

Ms. Cherry has been doing her thing on stage for over six years. In Junior High she was winning school talent shows and impressing peers with her mature lyrics, and sense of style. After her classmates were tucked into bed, Ms. Cherry was out schooling adult competition, in nightclubs and artist showcases all over Atlanta. Her explosive energy, lyrics and ability to dominate the stage instantly appealed to audiences and Ms. Cherry won every competition she entered.

Never one to follow someone else’s interpretation of her talent, Ms. Cherry was initially introduced to StreetWize Recordz execs four years ago as a vocalist, but knew she had the skills to be billed as the label’s first female rap artist. Determined to prove herself, she quickly penned a couple of verses and slipped them in on a song she was asked to sing and the rest is history.

The crunk new single “It’s Whatever”, with its banging beat and Ms. Cherry’s feisty lyrics, has clubs jumping all over the south. Confident in her ability to hold her own as an emcee, this multi-talented beauty isn’t just another female relying on her sexuality to sell records; Ms. Cherry is the total package.

Jury Rejects Anti-Trust Allegations Against Clear Channel From Rival Promoter

A federal jury found that Clear Channel Communications Inc. did not violate antitrust laws in its competition with a rival promoter. The case was the first time a jury was able to examine such allegations against the company in thorough detail.

“This jury’s decision that Clear Channel did not violate antitrust laws sends a powerful signal to those who seek to wrongfully accuse us in the future,” said Andrew Levin, executive vice president and chief legal officer of Clear Channel Communications.

“We are, of course, disappointed that the jury agreed with Jam Sports’ other claim and failed to see this case for what it actually was — a disgruntled competitor that could not succeed in the marketplace and so took its case to a courtroom. We intend to vigorously appeal that decision and expect the appellate court to agree that Clear Channel’s actions were within the law.”

Ella Blame’s Music In Feature Film “Discover Me”

Ella Blame, a Psychedelic Pop, Psychedelic Dance and Ethereal/Ambient duo has contributed its music to the soundtrack of a feature film titled “Discover Me”.

This movie has been produced by jenkev productions, Inc., an independent New York, NY, and Dallas, TX, based film company founded and managed by theater and film professionals, Jennifer Clary and Kevin Haberer.

“Discover Me” is a cutting-edge feature film exhibiting especially realistic concepts developed to establish a new genre in today’s film arena that examines an Internet community’s impact on the formation of modern day relationships. Three interwoven stories provide the foundation for “Discover Me”. The first segment follows the rocky relationship that develops between an agoraphobic painter and a man living in her apartment building. The second plot revolves around a closet masochist’s attempts to fulfill his private longings. The final story thread explores the complications that arise when a girl on the rebound finds herself falling in love with a eunuch.

Record Labels Discover Cure For Singles Sales Slump

Record companies are on the road to recovery from decreasing CD sales with the help of a new di music format provided by London digital music company Digimpro.

Roots Manuva new track Too Cold released today comes with the new di music player that gives fans the ability to edit and personalise tracks using alternative, original material that is also included with the single, and resave them as MP3 files. The scope of the alternative materials is unlimited, with Roots Manuva providing a number of alternative vocals, guitar, drums and base tracks.

Far beyond traditional remix software, di also allows for real time and randomly generated remixes using these alternative tracks. Available for both download and CD sales, the di player can produce almost infinite variations and works on all PCs and can be transferred to digital music players.

The new single contains enough alternative tracks to be able to create an almost indefinite number of versions. With that many combinations no two are ever going to be the same, so each version is truly personal.

RavenWestGuitar.com Launches New RWG Guitar Line

RavenWestGuitar.com today announced the official launch of their new RWG brand line of guitars. Owner Eric Bergquist explains the concept behind the new line as “Giving guitarists a truly fantastic instrument without the need to mortgage their house to afford it!” Bergquist, who was previously involved in the successful Raven guitar company until it’s demise following the untimely death of it’s CEO, had seriously considered getting out of the guitar business. Phone calls, letters and e-mails soon made him change his mind.

“There was real customer disappointment and sadness when Raven closed it’s doors,” he said, ” Raven owners were extremely loyal to the brand and have that sort of underground camaraderie that often develops when people realize something is so good and such a great deal, and that they’re the first ones smart enough to have discovered it.” Buyer review sites like HarmonyCentral.com are packed with glowing praise and high marks for the entire Raven line, and certainly bear out Bergquist’s claims. Many believe that because of the quality of the guitars, Raven instruments are now close to achieving collector status.

After listening to former customers and consulting with many guitar players, from basement strummers to pro and working bands, Bergquist said that he realized that there was not only a market for a quality guitar line in that particular price zone, but a real need as well. “With Raven, we’d used a great Korean builder” he said. “Their build quality, ‘no shortcuts’ manufacturing policy and attention to detail was absolutely first rate. My former customers often told me that they wished I’d resurrect the Raven line, but legally that wasn’t possible, so last year after much thought, I approached our builder with the blueprint for the new RWG line.”

The Highway Hi Fi

Thursday, March 24th, 2005

Since The Rock and Roll Report won’t be published March 25th, 2005 I have posted this week’s "Friday Fun" a day early.

1956_plymouth From the mid-fifties to the early sixties, Chrysler offered the ultimate "Hi Fi" component for your  car,  the RCA Highway Hi-FI- "Where the vinyl meets the road."  Car_turntable_1 Yes, you too could cruise around in your Chrysler boat on wheels listening to an amazing variety of records on custom 16 2/3 rpm vinyl records. I know that they had something similar in England because I can recall stories of John Lennon screeching around in his psychedelic Rolls Royce blaring "Knights in White Satin" on his custom turntable  that was installed in the back seat. Obviously, the invention of the cassette and 8 track tape ended this little slice of hi fi history but still, wouldn’t it be cool to install one of these in your "new beatle" or mini-cooper and astound and amaze your friends as they listen in awe to your car record player playing "Come Along for the Ride" by Steve Allen? Ah, just a thought. Have a great weekend everybody!

A good guide to some cool radio

Thursday, March 24th, 2005

When writer Mark Morford, columnist for the SF Gate lamented the state of rock radio in his column All hail the death of radio- Clear Channel suffer and rock radio is gasping its last and, more importantly, does anyone care? he sounded the death knell for rock radio in 2005 but readers let him know that, although there is plenty of crap on the dial these days, there are still a number of very cool radio stations out there and there is a radio revolution a brewing. In his column And now for some real radio- Readers extol some glorious alternatives he lists a number of great stations that you can listen to that prove the point that all hope is not lost. A great list of some really amazing radio, it just goes to prove my point that radio done well is the most intimate and yet the most community-forming media out there.

Just a quick note that the 5-hour finale of 50 Tracks, CBC Radio’s special on the "50 essential Canadian songs" will happen Saturday, March 26th, 2005 at 1PM EST on CBC Radio One (consult their site for the time in your area) and at 7:00 PM EST on March 26th, 2005 on Radio Two. It was a really fascinating run of great radio that just goes to show you that the CBC can do radio right. TV is another matter entirely of course.

My magazine rack has expanded already

Thursday, March 24th, 2005

Figures. I just post about the magazines that I currently enjoy and now I discover two more that have made my essential list already.

  • Bucketfull of Brains- This is actually a rediscovery as I have read Bucketfull of Brains in the past but it kind of slipped out of view for awhile but I have rediscovered this classic and intend to subscripe post haste. Fabulously diverse with a nice combination of the popular (a relative term for mags like these) and obscure, this UK mag comes out four times a year and is a fantastic read. Since it is impossible to find on the racks I advise you to subscribe.
  • The Big Takeover- I feel like an idiot in that I have not even heard of this mag before but holy cow is it incredible. Published twice a year and edited by Jack Rabid, to give you an idea of the scope of this thing check out the contents of the current issue as listed on their website:
    • Here’s the lineup on that new issue: It has Wilco on the cover, from a long interview we did with Jeff Tweedy in his rehearsal/recording loft in Chicago. And it also includes long, thoughtful interviews with Scottish sensations Franz Ferdinand, Aussie legend Nick Cave of his Bad Seeds and Birthday Party fame, Bad Religion’s Brett Gurewitz and Greg Graffin, all three surviving members of the reunited MC5, and all five of the similarly reformed American Music Club, Canadian power-pop faves Sloan, that genre’s ageless Chris Stamey of the dBs, London punk/trash rock heroes The Libertines, England’s moody/broody Hope of the States, The Diodes and the history of 1977 Ontario punk, the perennial Stiff Little Fingers, Jeremy Enigk of Fire Theft and Sunny Day Real Estate, Dr. Robert Moog inventor of the Moog synthesizer, older Scottish punk stars The Rezillos, part two of The Weirdos’ John Denney and Cliff Roman, and part two of Rocket From the Tombs’ stars David Thomas and Cheetah Chrome; as well as Matthew Sweet, The Black Keys, Ron Sexsmith, Waxwings, Dora Flood, Inouk, The Places, Oneida, producer Warne Livesey, and more.
  • Incredible stuff for true rock and roll fanatics.

The Miskatonic Acid Test

Thursday, March 24th, 2005

If you want an insight into the making of what looks like a very cool indie rock, psychedelic horror film then check out the site for the upcoming film The Miskatonic Acid Test. Currently filming in Maine and Massachusets, the feature-length film "combines psychedelic rock with cosmic horror concepts pioneered by the writer H.P. Lovecraft, mixing in a good bit of philosophy, antiwar politics, and humor along the way." The site has all kinds of cool things to download including a trailer and what is promised to be an increasing bunch of very cool MP3s as music is an important component of the film. Grab the popcorn and head out to the site for a tour. The Miskatonic Acid Test will hopefully be coming to a theatre near you.

The Blue Van

Thursday, March 24th, 2005

The_blue_van After blitzing SXSW, Danish band The Blue Van should conquer the rest of North America and beyond with some killer rock and roll. When they say "maximum rock and roll!" they aint kidding as these guys are fantastic. Check out the video for Revelation of Love as your first step, and then head over to their Music section for some snippets from their upcoming album "The Art of Rolling" due in the U.S. on April 5th, 2005. Some more great rock and roll by a bunch of guys who throw together all kinds of rock and roll influences into one big sonic stew and then let it explode all over you. Excellent.

Ben Fong-Torres and how to ride the Moonlight Groove Highway

Thursday, March 24th, 2005

As one of the DJs for the very cool and brand spanking new Moonlight Groove Highway, Ben Fong-Torres discusses the concept and how he puts together his show in his latest Radio Waves column. One thing that caught my eye (besides the excellent sources he quotes from in the article!) is the fact that Moonlight Groove is now streaming so head over to their site and and register to get your password for access. Unfortunately it doesn’t work with a Mac yet but their geeks are hot on the trail and working feverishly to get everything up and running properly and Mac access fixed. You might want to also check out their cool contest You Drive the Groove.
